|rasta| Microsoft SE?
Google's 75% market share is safe IMO. But if Microsoft base their new SE on Google..... then I can only see benefits. |

I remember learning in 6th grade that a "google" was a 1 with 100 zero's after it

MSN will probably drop Inktomi and use their own engine, which is spidering as we speak.

Thumbler,
IMO - if those changes take place, it will only serve to make those SE's even weaker.. While Google keeps its simple interface and the high quality of its search results.. I dont think there will be a challenger. .. at least until MS builds its search into every bit of software it owns.. and newbs start using it without knowing that other SE's exist.. as in IE. DD

DDave...or maybe Billy Boy will just drop the 2 billion and buy Serg out
![]() (noted that Inktomi results are being tested on Yahoo occasionally already) and dont think they'll wait till the end of the year to make the swing....they have been ramping up the advertising already |

DD: The problem with google at this point is that they are continuing to look at more revenue generating streams, so as to be able to bring the company public with the highest valuation.
As a result, you see them spending them building non-search features, and starting to get away from the "best results". Adding these features is adding page views and advertising space / revenue, but does nothing to add to the search results. Their sticking to a 100% algo based process for eliminating spam isn't working, and unless they make major changes every couple of months, the spammers get the best of them and many of the best terms are crowded up with useless, spammy entries. Google has, to my understanding, nobody reviewing popular search terms and taking action against spam entires. Rather, they wait for complaints and try to adjust their filters to get rid of it. Sadly, by the next update, new techniques have been used and the spam continues. Their entire link populatiry thing is being abused to hell by everyone and their dog, and more and more often I am NOT finding what I am looking for when I use google, which never use to happen. At the point that Yahoo drops Google, then I think we might be seeing the start of the end of Google as the top dog, to be replaced by, well, I don't really know. It's a cycle, and the trick is spotting the next one in line. |juggle| Alex |

I don't think google will be pushed out in a hurry, it may loose a small % of the market but not a major change overnight.
one interesting thing with google is their distributed computing projects, they say they have around 20,000 computers over the world dedicating their idle cpu hrs to projects google has decided to participate in, including projects to help improve google itself. just a thought. |

Well you know boys, a nuclear reactor is a lot like women. You just have to read the manual and press the right button

DangerDave is spot on about Microsoft....
Hell all they got was a slap on the wrist for crushing Netscape that way. You KNOW when Longhorn comes out with it's super duper file system that the fight for SE supremacy is over and they will win by design... ![]() ![]() ![]() |

True Alex... but I still challenge you to find better results on any other search engine when looking for a specific subject.
I believe "surfers" made Google the most popular SE for it's quality results.. and this is still what drives them. Picking up Blogs etc.. again (IMO) has made it more popular with surfers and may well strengthen it further. Re:- SE spam... Can you tell me an SE that wasn't spammed-up five minutes after launch?? Altavista? HotBot? Yahoo even deliberatly "posts" the spammers as long as they pay the extortion amount. Quote:
![]() I think you are correct that when/if Yahoo drops Google.. they will lose some market share.. but I dont think it will be a mortal wound.. Of course this is all speculation.. either way the outcomes will be interesting and mean more work for us all.. ![]() DD
