How do you organize (logistics)?
Wondering how others here have found it best to organize things for their site(s) on their local computer?
For example, within my folder named after my domain I have: /scripts - for any proggies/scripts /local - for any source PNG or DWT files [or other large files] /categories - for all the various cats my content could go into /cssfiles - for all CSS files /freesites - for any free sites in development /originaldownloads - which contains all my original source content sorted by provider /readyimages - for all images ready to go with domain stamped and resized if needed. /images - for completed JPG/GIF graphics /sponsors - for all sponsor related materials Of course, most of the above folders have subfolders. Categories has quite a few- 'non-nude teaser pics' containing all the pics suitable for warning/front pages. But...I'm not so sure this is the best way to organize things. For those of you who have been doing this a while can ya share what sort of organization works best for you? Also, as a general practice do you make up names for the models (once you put the pics on a site) or tend to use the model name from your content provider? TIA |

Ideally I think the best way to organize your stuff would be to have it in the exact same way that it would be placed on your server. Then if ever anything should go wrong you could simply just connect your FTP and hit upload.
Unfortunately I don't have that system myself ![]() I have a directory for every domain I have. In there I have the files places like they are on the server as well. But all my free sites are in a directory called free sites with lots of subdirs for each free site. I then have an Excel spreadsheet with informations about there free site 1 is actually located and what picture set is used and so on. It works... but if I ever was about to move to another host it would be a nightmare.

My files are copies of what's on the servers - I then have many xl & txt files that have other info like lists of free sites & galleries & domain PR's & whatnot.

I have folders identical to my server files in addition I have a work folder in each file that I do not upload. Plus I have a folder for new content and a folder for new templates.
When I build, I a create a new folder in the site it's being added to and then drop in a new template and the pics. I keep all the newer sites and galleries on separate web pages live for SE food and curious surfers. ![]() |

Don't forget to back up whatever system you do have onto CD, regularly.
What would happen if your server and computer lost all data on the same day? You have to think worst case senario, and plan to back up everything so any loss is ..... you get the picture. I got backups of backups and then some.

good option is to have one server at home
(it can be also your router etc.) with same settings as your domains (but with .lan extention for example- original site www.mysexlist.com and www.mysexlist.lan) you can then test everything before it goes on-line and like Urb said - backup, backup, backup (my server is making daily backups - first on my comp (in special backup directory), second on cd (when inserted)) |

About once a month I open a shell and tarball my home directories. I have crontabs set up to do MySQL dumps into a non public directory so it gets tared as well.
I only keep a small part of each domain, the part that I'm working on, locally since much of what I have on the server will never be worked on again. If I need something old I can just extract it from one of my tarballs. |

Alphawolf,
Just to answer your last question: I would recommend to use the names of the models as you get them from your contentprovider; you'd be surprised how much se-traffic we get in our store from people searching for certain models by name.

I noticed sites sometimes just make names up...even for known porn stars. ??? Seemed odd to me. The only reason I can think of to make up a name for an unknown model is if you don't want others to find more content of the model easily. Other than that, it just seems like a lot more work to make up model names. <shrug> About the organization- I was wondering about it again tonight. I just downloaded a bunch of promotional material from FlyntDigital. They have a load of banners and free pics. I will need to organize to reflect my web server organization better as it's just a PITA the way I have it now. |pissed| WRT the back-up: yeah- blank CD's are super cheap. I also sometimes replicate entire folders and put them in a folder names 'fullbu01252004' on a partition that is my 'installation' partition. I then archive stuff from that partition. |
