Question ISPs inserting code on pages

Seems that some ISPs will start modifying pages on the fly, and inserting their own stuff. If you notice the bit about patents they are referring to Advertising.

Now if I was doing it, I would take a good chunk of the left side for my advertising and push the sponsored PPC ads off the right hand side.

Google Hijacked -- Major ISP to Intercept and Modify Web Pages.
The ISP simply decided to modify Google on their own, demonstrating a real world example of ISPs Spying On and Modifying Web Traffic

That's ridiculous. I will never use an ISP who modifies webpages to show their own ads like that...

Edit * After reading more, it looks like they are showing information specific to the subscribers cable account. I still do not care for the way they are doing it though.

I saw that on Matt Cutts blog. Like he said, it's the only time you will see yahoo mentioned 3 times on the google front page.

United States Patent 20070233857 (Application)
Abstract:
A network device for monitoring and modifying data traffic between a client device and a server device is disclosed. The network device is configured to provide targeted advertisements to a user based on some or all of the data traffics generated the user. Different from a proxy server, the network device operates transparently from both perspectives of a computer being used by the user and a website being visited by the user. The network device is disposed in line between the computer and the network so that all data traffics are examined. The data packets exchanged between a computer and a website being visited are altered or modified in such a way that the head of the packets remains largely intact while the payloads of the packets are changed to suit the need of delivering transparently the targeted commercial information.

I read it, tickler. And I'm still with LowryBigwood. If you're paying for hosting, apart from whatever agreement you may have on parked domains, that's your property so long as you are the tenant. That's coming from someone who's "day job" is as a web host.

I'm not sure why you are working hosting into this?

They are talking about being able to intercept and modify pages on the fly between the web server, and the surfer. In simple words, they can change your page to anything they want, and you will never know from the host end!

Ah. OK tickler. I see what you mean. It does raise other worries for hosts, but that's off topic. Thanks.
