What a day to be a Dad...

...nobody told me there'd be days like these.

My wife and I received a phone call this morning from our 9 year old's school informing us that the little girl killed in a Tuesday evening car accident was a close friend of hers. Her 8 year old friend Bryanna - whose father was killed in the WTC attack on 9/11. Sad, sad news. So my wife and I went to pick up our daughter today as she was upset and wanted to come home.

The accident is under investigation, but the car that struck her was travelling at such a high rate of speed it nearly tore the car in half. The gallery from the local paper is linked below. And just keep in mind that the car is pictured as it lay nothing had to be pried open or anything, thats how it came to rest.

Wow, that does look bad. Kids and accidents is a parent's biggest fear. We had every parents nightmare a bunch of years back during our daughter's prom night. She didn't come home and in the morning we received a call from the Troopers saying she was in an accident. They said the other kids went to a local hospital but she was taken by helicopter to a bigger hospital. She ended up with a small scar and a bunch of money. But, that was a terrible night and morning.

I can only imagine. I was able to relate to my daughter that when I was just a bit older (16) I lost a friend of mine in an auto crash...so she knew she wasnt "alone" with how she was feeling. But I honestly think kids "get it" better than us..everything is so simplified, or so it seems. Very cut and dry for children.

Shes doing OK, as of now. A few of the girls from her class I think are attending the funeral together along with "Moms" I think its better they go as a "group" rather than alone so they can understand they arent alone, that what they feel..is OK.

My little daughter will be 13 month old tomorrow [Yes, she brought us the best Xmas EVER! ].

In the first half year all the serious thoughts went through my mind what bad things can happen to her until the age of 21. I even imagined what will I do when I arrive home after work finding her with a pierced punk on my couch drinking my beer from my fridge planning to do nasty things to her based on ideas he found on the internet watching galleries which my friends and i submitted years ago

Seriously, first 6 months are heavy. You have to undress the stress and just laugh on these things.

Discussing parentship would need another complete board but summarizing it: anytime I have any kind of trouble or bad feeling it passes away when I lay on the ground and spend some minutes with this cute little angel. Its even better than an AcidTrip

If I see news related to childrens accidents and stuff I have to turn away immediately. I can't stand it. My heart brokes if I see any children suffer...

Oh man that poor mother. First her husband and now her daughter. Although I'm a "fatalist" believing that when it is your time, it's your time, nothing ever makes sense when children are involved. I'd like to think that wherever her dad is, he needed her more than her mom did.

Truthfully, even when your kids are grown, you never ever stop worrying about them.

Hopefully your daughter will have fond memories of her friend once this passes.

Sad, sad news Jay. I have a 16 and a 13 year old, and hearing stuff like that scares the bejesus out of me.

Kids are pretty tough. I'm sure your daughter will be fine. It's probably harder for you seeing her upset than it is for her.

That is so sad!!!!

I have a friend online in our biz that his 3 year old daughter was killed in December in a car accident. Needless to say he did not attend the Vegas show and I haven' talked to him much. He is still in pain and I'm sure will be for a long time.

Yes.....very sad

My girls are 6 and 4. Before they were born i often was somewhat callus about such incidents. I felt they were sad, but I really didn't care. Since the girls have come along I find such stories physically gut wrenching. I often avoiding reading anything like that because it upsets me too much. Complete 180 in how I think.

Yeah, amazing how parenthood changes you in that respect. It makes you go through previously unknown levels of fear when it comes to your kids.

thats sad and i hope all will be fine with your daughther and i know as a parent you will do all to make her feel better or to make her go thru all her bad things.
I know from own experience kids wont forget fast, last year my daughther that time 12 or 11 was a withness seeing an accident where a man on a bike got hit by a car right infront of her nose and saw the man laying with his bleeding head under the wheel of the car, that time i posted it here on the board and got some nice advice from sheepguy, still more then a year later, my daugther still sees the woman who drove over the the man (yep she still drives a car even 70 years old and almost killed a person) and right away she mention it all again.
Kids wont forget fast, as a parent we only can do what we have in our power, alot of talking and try to help our kids as much as we can
