I said goodbye to an old friend today

I said good by to a land line today.

I've had a land line since I moved out on my own when I was a teenager.

I've had the phone that was hard wired to the wall. Then I thought it was great when they gave us phone jacks. Then just about every type of cordless phone made. For the last five or so years I've had Vonage as my land line service simringing into my cell line and have been using the house cordless phones that were connected to it less and less.

Now with the cell phone plan I'm on I found that I was never using my land line and having two numbers was more hassle then it was worth so today my Vonage number was ported over to my cell phone and disconnected.

This is the first time since I was a teenager that I don't have a land line. It actually seems kind of strange.

I do still have a line going to my alarm system that also carries my dsl but no phones plugged into it although I do have a multifunction printer also plugged into it for those that haven't moved into the 21st century and still use faxes.

I've got a big pile of cordless phones now that I don't know what to do with.

We switched to FIOS 3 or 4 weeks ago and part of the package was a landline, our first landline since 2004 I think. We haven't given the # out to anyone, she will use it for her business and calling her family to save our minutes on the cells, not that we have ever used them all.

i wanted to give up my landline a couple of months ago, reason we have 4 different cell phone numbers here, but i found a deal which cost me 10 euro a month and i can call my parents for whole days for free,so i kept the line, my daughter also use that landline to phone her boyfriend...for hours and it cost only 10 euros a month, much cheaper then using the cell phone, so now we are stuck with 5 phonenumbers

I was going to wait until Microcells became available here but with AT&T introducing the A List and having a Google Voice number that I can add to my A List I decided to this week kill it when I saw that we had close to 9000 rollover minutes that just keep on going up each month and it being over a month since we made a call on our land line.

If I made calls out of the county then I would have kept Vonage since Vonage is now worldwide calling for free.

I mostly just real happy to have just one number only. With having a land line and a cell number people would call back whatever number came up in their caller ID. I've even had a lot of people try to text to my land line and wondering why I was getting their texts. Now I've got one device in my pocket that gets 100% of my phone calls plus all the other good stuff.

for real we use the cellphones only to sms to eachother thats cheaper then phoning, i have a prepaid, also my kids, hubby has a membership, there is so much competition here in holland between different companies that the landlines are getting cheaper by the month, now i pay 10 euros a month and i can phone for free, while a year before i had to pay 20 euros a month for the membership and then the cost of phoning to others, which got easely reach to say 80 euros a month, but the competition is so strong now, the same is going on with internet and digital tv, now you can get here free phonening, tv and internet for 20 euros a month..to much competion.
oh and i have to say, my kids on membership...no way, it will cost me tons so thats why they are on prepaid, if they wanna phone someone, oke but on your own cost not on mine.....hey they have to learn

I have a landline (that I don't even remember the number to, for a few reasons
1. it is included basically for free with my ATT U-Verse
2. my direct tv phones home on it for any pay per view (you would think it could do that through the ethernet conection)
3. Since I dropped my second cell phone which had a 954 number, If company buzzes me from the front gate I can let them in using it (the gate needs a 954 exchange and my cell is 561...I ONLY plug in the phone if I know I have company or have a delivery coming)

I haven't had a landline at home since 2000. I convinced my boss to drop his landline at two of the offices since everyone had cell phones anyway. We keep two lines at the main office for the creditcard machine and voice.

I finally threw out several landline phones that I paid a pretty penny for back in 2000. Tired of lugging them around everytime I moved.

@cleo
You could get skype and an adapter and use all your landline phones. Skype runs about $3/month for unlimited outgoing calls, about $30/year for an incoming phone number.

Or better yet, just donate them and take a tax deduction.

I forgot about my DirecTV DVRs. Actually they are also plugged into the line for my alarm system I never order pay per view so the only reason I have their DVRs plugged into the alarm line is so that they don't give me messages all the time that they don't have a dial tone.

I think I pay around $14 above the cost of my DSL to have a line with a dial tone. The line has zero features and no long distance. If it wasn't for my alarm system needing a line I would drop that as well.

So I guess I do sort of have a land line but the only thing plugged into is my alarm, DVRs, and a fax that almost never gets faxes but no phones are plugged into it.

I've not had a landline for at least 4 years -- been using cellphone for all that time because I move around so much

When I moved out a few years back and started doing it all on my own I ditched the landline. They was no point and it seemed like just an extra bill.
