Urb, did you actually read any of those so-called "exploits"? I read a couple, and they all seemed to require ALOT of user action to make happen... one of them involved the mechanism that creates desktop icons after a drag and drop... it requires that the screen isn't at full size, that the surfer clicks on the window and moves it slightly, and that a webpage with the code is on the screen at the time, which creates a desktop icon which is then executed. WOW.
I can see that one moving a bunch of viruses around. Most all software has bugs. Most all software has exploits. Most all software isn't used by 90% of people and put under bright lights every day by ill intentioned people. Heck, most software doesn't have it's code and technical bulletins published for developers to see because the court ordered it, which makes it about 1000 times easier to figure out exploits. I am disgusted that the patches don't always seem to fix the problem. I am equally disgusted when nobody seems to realize that most of the viruses that cause problems are using OLD exploits long since patched... and they keep being a problem because people don't apply the patches. Did you know that most viruses still require the receiver to actually EXECUTE the attached code? I dislike Microsoft. But they make me money EVERY day (because the net wouldn't be the same without them... we would still have non-standard browsers and 10 versions of web pages...) They are the devil, but the devil without which we wouldn't be here to start with. Anyway, this is going to be an interesting week, I start back at school (20 years since I last graduated!), and many of my classes this time require that I use a G4 mac. It's going to be interesting playing on the other side. Alex |

Urb, if you read them cafeully, you will see that most of them are NOT LIKELY TO HAPPEN... Someone is reading code and looking for little tiny chinks in the armour. This isn't real world stuff - and as a result most of them could never be used as an exploit by a virus writer. These are people working to try to make microsoft look bad, not to try to fix anything. IMHO.
Microsoft writes some sloppy code. Having millions of hackers looking at it every day looking for holes only makes it more likely that they find them. Cleo: Mac G4s with OS 9.2 ... it's a real pro-mac school (one of the camera class teachers yesterday went on for about 20 minutes... sort of like going to someone else's church, I guess!). We'll see. They are all pumped on the G5... hope for Apple's sake that they finally hit a home run... Alex |
