Military Draft on its way
For those of you not around back in the early Vietnam days - you might pay heed to this - it compares to a very similar approach taken 40 years ago - oh yeah I forgot - GWB says we'll not be having a draft - and of course privacy is never an issue during "terror times"

Gee... and just when I thought my list of reasons to move to Canada was as long as it could get. The bastards aren't getting my kid, regardless of their underhanded attempts and techniques... I'll do whatever I have to do to stop them

I remember being in college back in the early 90's & the Gulf War going on & talk of a draft back then. One college magazine posted some helpful foreign language phrases to make it easier on us if there was a draft:
"I'll have a Molson's, eh" "Is this the bus to Calgary?" |

Come on people Jeez. If our forefathers had that same Opinion in WW II you would be fucking communist right now more than you already are. USA is one of the countries left where it isn't mandatory to do at least 1 year in military service. Yeah the laws they have are fucked up lately but if you think it cant get much worse try standing in line for hours just for a loaf of bread like they did in the communist ruled countries.
Alot of the punk ass kids in this country need to go to the military to discipline their ass. Alot Not all of them are way out of control. I do not agree with the war in iraq either but like my buddy tells me ( doing his 2nd 18 months in Iraq) he doesnt ask why or how come. he just figures there might be a few people there that really do want to be free from oppresion so he does his job everyday and asks nothing in return. Here is some interesting reading Maybe one day you will thank a vet. The average age of the military man is 19 years. He is a short haired, tight-muscled kid who, under normal circumstances is considered by society as half man, half boy. Not yet dry behind the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old enough to die for his country. He never really cared much for work and he would rather wax his own car than wash his father's; but he has never collected unemployment either. He's a recent High School graduate; he was probably an average student, pursued some form of sport activities, drives a ten year old jalopy, and has a steady girlfriend that either broke up with him when he left, or swears to be waiting when he returns from half a world away. He listens to rock and roll or hip-hop or rap or jazz or swing and 155mm howitzor. He is 10 or 15 pounds lighter now than when he was at home because he is working or fighting from before dawn to well after dusk.He has trouble spelling, thus letter writing is a pain for him, but he can field strip a rifle in 30 seconds and reassemble it in less time in the dark. He can recite to you the nomenclature of a machine gun or grenade launcher and use either one effectively if he must. He digs foxholes and latrines and can apply first aid like a professional. He can march until he is told to stop or stop until he is told to march. He obeys orders instantly and without hesitation, but he is not without spirit or individual dignity. He is self-sufficient. He has two sets of fatigues: he washes one and wears the other. He keeps his canteens full and his feet dry. He sometimes forgets to brush his teeth, but never to clean his rifle. He can cook his own meals, mend his own clothes, and fix his own hurts. If you're thirsty, he'll share his water with you; if you are hungry, his food. He'll even split his ammunition with you in the midst of battle when you run low. He has learned to use his hands like weapons and weapons like they were his hands. He can save your life - or take it, because that is his job. He will often do twice the work of a civilian, draw half the pay and still find ironic humor in it all. He has seen more suffering and death then he should havein his short lifetime. He has stood atop mountains of dead bodies, and helped to create them. He has wept in public and in private, for friends who have fallen in combat and is unashamed. He feels every note of the National Anthem vibrate through his body while at rigid attention, while tempering the burning desire to 'square-away' those around him who haven't bothered to stand, remove their hat, or even stop talking. In an odd twist, day in and day out,far from home, he defends their right to be disrespectful. Just as did his Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, he is paying the price for our freedom. Beardless or not, he is not a boy. He is the American Fighting Man that has kept this country free for over 200 years. He has asked nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding. Remember him, always, for he has earned our respect and admiration with his blood. Because Without the American Soldier there Would Be No United States of America.

Jesus Riff....
There's more to this issue than willingness or unwillingness to serve, and I didn't hear anyone disrespect the military except for UW, who is both disrespectful of everything and a vet. There's a broader issue here. Does anyone think this "database" will be used ONLY for the advertised purpose? Even that purpose is suspect, especially considering school districts will be extorted with federal money in order to force their participation. This has all the overtones of an Orwellian nightmare. |

No kidding I am a vet and I think this list is total bullshit, if the kids WANT to join they will, the US Gov has NO business having this data base as it is already law to register when you turn the age of 18, so why do they now need all the other information?
This is just yet another step into a place everyone says this country "would never go". |

and since Im the one that brought this up in the first place - I am both a vet and I protested against the draft in the 60s and the war in Vietnam - I took part in the May Day shutdown of Wash DC and have been teargassed by my government on quite a few occassions. I also served 12 years in the military and decorated by their little medals and ribbons.
I also agree that the military is a great way to fix the problem of what I consider a total erosion to apathy of parents now-adays that allows things like gang violence and other ridiculous behavoir to flourish without correction. I however, can't stand the premise of 16 year old kids being catalouged for reference and email, letter and phone contact to try to coerce them into signing up - and even more importantly - to have a database file of all of these teens to be able to track their wherabouts - a huge privacy issue. If the government needs people they can ask - and if they can get congress to pass the laws, can even institute a legal draft - but no way in this world can they be allowed to invade the privacy of every teen in America. And if I were a parent of someone that young I would be contacting my congressional rep and chewing out their ears right now. But guess whats gonna happen - those same apathetic parents that dont vote, dont care what little Johnnie does - are gonna sit back and let the US do it to them again - cause they're spineless. |

Even with 2 boys of age, I do wish they would start the draft again. It's the only way for the rich republicans to see what life at war is like.

The only draft that I would not protest is served in a pint glass. No one should be forced to risk life and limb for someone else's crusade. Popular wars see massive voluntary enlistment. Unpopular wars see a massive decrease. If they want people to die for them, they should choose better causes than lining their pockets.
Besides, the food sucks.

Jim - youve got to be kidding - I hope - you dont think that those rich kids would ever be drafted - they sure werent in the Vietnam war - they got to sit back and enjoy college while the ones that couldnt afford college had to go and fight - it was called a 2S deferment - and only applied to someone that was rich enough to go to college.
