web cam tech question

I'm trying to help out a friend by taking the hour-plus long web cam video file she has and chopping into smaller, much more downloadable files for her site members. Would be no problem if it were, say, a quicktime .mov, which I could slice up in quicktime pro in no time. Or an .avi or .mpeg or, basically anything other than what it is. The damnable .wmv file. I've got a copy of Vegas Video 4.0 that I've been trying to use, but I'm new to it, it doesn't seem to be able to figure out how to render this file decently, and it tends to poop out halfway through a very long rendering session as I run out of virtual memory.

Anyone know of a good wmv conversion or editing program? Preferably free, as I have no money whatsoever?
Any cam dollies, hotties, or the like have advice?

There's another program out there called AVI, Mpeg, Asf, Wmv Splitter...its great, and works well. http://www.boilsoft.com/videosplitter/ Its only $24.95

Ed--I'll definately take a look at that. I need something all encompassing and idiot proof.

Cleo--Plat-form? What means this Plat-form? Actually, my roommate is computer savvy enough that he's got a couple of macs. I'll check and see if he's got that--thanks!

Well the videos i made were all custom 1 of a kind for viewers so i never ran them on my sites..

as for my girls.. i reposted the post.. i'm sure a few of them run replys on their sites and have video running as well. so maybe one of them will have a clue..

Tart might know as well, she's very tech saavy..i'm just the 'front girl'.

Thanks again, Ed--I downloaded the free demo and chopped an hour long cam show into seventeen handy pocket sized chunks in no time.

docholly, if you hear anything from your forum, I'd still be very interested in hearing what they have to say. There might be more of this type of work upcoming for me, and I'd be very interested in hearing if there are any particular pieces of software favored by those who regularly work with web cam-product as promotional material.
