forum scripts
What's your prefered forum "script" ???
I like vbulletin (this one, for those who don't know) but don't want to have to pay for each "instance" of it that I decide to use on a single domain. I'm splitting a domain into 3 separate areas, requiring 3 forums on same domain, and see no reason to pay $160 3 times for the privaledge. Are there any decent alternatives? Or will I have to bite the bullet? Kris p.s While I'm "almost ranting" where do people get off charging several times for the SAME script running on the SAME domain. Is this bizarre, or just me missing some fucking thing?? ![]() |

I don't know how to run the admin on it, but that http://www.phpbb.com/ one is free ( think) ad I've seen it on numerous sites.

Price can't be beat, but I've struggled with it in the past. It wasn't all that stable.
I need something with the features to keep surfers happy and the stability to keep me happy. vbulletin is still first choice, but looking for an alternative, just to way up my options (cost, features, etc). ![]() |

phpbb is a nice script but you need a really good server because its a little slow and it lacks some important features (like attaching pictures to your message), but you can mod the script yourself, if you have some coding skillz.

I'm currently looking for a forum script which is easier for non technical surfers to understand. Pretty much like wwwboard, but with smilies and some way of banning IPs. I used a script called Robboard for a while which was very simple, but had IP banning and an admin behind .htaccess... but I then upgraded to phpBB and now I got a load of posters moaning that they don't understand the phpBB board. ![]() So I'm looking for a simple middle ground board with a secure admin, that is fool proof from a surfer point of view.

You can easily import all your users/messages (as you want) across the 3 areas. You'll already know the admin end. You'll know where to go for support and what to expect. If you get something else you'll need to start from scratch, check to see if you can import the Vbulletin messages (if you want) and consider any mods you have for the board. It is always good to have options though which is why you posted here. ![]() Good luck with whatever you pick! |

urb -- it sounds like I'm in a similar situation. I had a look at the invision board and seems ok. I also found a site where you can get skins and mods : http://www.ibplanet.com/ . Problem is, unless you pay appx 70 bucks, you have the free trial download at the bottom. Judging by the reputation of vbulletin, it still might be worth the extra expense judging by alternatives. Only 15 bucks more.
p.s I know you're busy, but maybe you can help me with something (logo and top graphics over board). I'll email you asap with the details. I just need to get a little submitting done. kris |

You're absolutely right, although the way I phrased myself was a little misleading. It's a new site without any board at present. Due to the nature of it, I need it split into 3 areas, corresponding to the demographics of the sufers. I was a little suprised that I'd need, effectively, to buy the same board 3 times. The project's also not money-oriented. It's basically something I can show my dauhters when they ask what I do LOL So what I might do is lease the 3 boards. If it actually makes any money, then consider buying each. Not sure yet. Damn, I sound like such a cheap bastard! LOL Makes me wonder though. I wonder if any other adult webmasters have mainstream sites for the same reason I'm getting some? My family and friends know what i do, but obviously my kids are in the dark. |

![]() Regarding the mainstream sites: You mean your kids can't go to Show 'n Tell with some print outs of your adult stuff? ![]() I think the easiest thing would be to put up a 'web design'/'seo' site. You can have a few non adult sites that may even make money via AdSense or conventional affiliate programs. You can't show or talk about everything you work on because everyone wants an NDA these days. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Chiming in late, but what the hey...
vBulletin & InvisionBoard are probably the "cadilacs" of message boards, I would agree. However, I've done more postNuke/PNphpBB2 installations than I can count in the past year. phpBB2 is much more secure than the original phpBB and to my knowledge most, if not all, of the former security holes have been patched up and closed. The features and look/feel of it also have been vastly been improved and it *almost* looks like vBulletin now. Best of luck with vBulletin though. It IS a solid board - why else would GG&J gone with it? ![]()

vBulletin is worth every penny! I own 3 licenses for it and run one site which averages over 40,000 unique visitors a month resulting in over 2 million page views a month, and I haven't had a single problem with it!

![]() Just wanted to thank everyone here and those that emailed me. It never fails to amaze me how good-natured and friendly you folks are, especially given the busy lives you lead. I went with vBulletin in the end (if it's good enough for GG&J, it's more than good enough for me!
![]() So thanks again for your advice, offers, and input. Here's hoping you all have a great week! ![]() ![]() |
