Lightbulb Code/Browser Checking

Recently I have been surfing around using Mozilla and I am amazed at how many web sites are not coded correctly for it.

I know it ain't the browser of choice for most of the planet, but it does show up some errors in coding which are forgiven by IE.

I saw a webmaster site yesterday which was image sliced and looked fine in IE. But with Mozilla there's two big gaping horizontal gaps.

Of course I have not emailed the site owner because I don't give that much of a s**t.

Im not sure if it that IE is more forgiving.
More like people use MS products to make their sites. Or they use tags that are proprietary to IE.
But whatever the reason, I wish webmasters would build using STANDARDS!

Oh yeah.
And go by some of your sponsors sites in Mozilla. You'll be unpleasantly surprised. I've sent emails off more than a couple times.

IE seems to be the most forgiving of bad code.

Then there are places that use code that only works in IE.

Code correctly to standards and your pages will work everywhere.

I think we are going to see much larger percentages in the future using browsers other then IE.

So the question is...which is better? A browser that knows what you mean and does it anyway. Or one that has no idea what you want it to do?

Sloppy code slows down pages and will break later on as new versions of browsers come out since they are written to support the current standards. Also it means that you are hoping that your pages are going to get viewed in a browser that will work with your bad coding.

It is like any language, you can not use proper grammar and still be understood, but you may not end up saying what you mean and it gets worse with each generation.

I like IE ....... the only reason I am not using it right now is because I feel safer using Moz whilst surfing unknown sites.

100% agree Cleo.. aiming for the lowest common denominator.. has allowed Microsoft to make a ot of money... but offers nothing for the future/skills/quality/etc/etc.

What all these IE users don't realize is that it doesn't fix mistakes that other browsers may correct.

I can do my tables with really fucked up percentages and on my Mac using IE the table will display just fine using the text inside the table to decide how to draw the table, but that same table will be a mess on Windows IE. The problem is not with WIndows IE, but with the fact that my code is wrong. I've leaned what mistakes don't show up on my Mac so I try to double check those things.

Each browser handles coding errors different with some things looking ok in one browser and not another. If you want your page to look right in all browsers write proper code and they will. That being said we all make mistakes so when someone tells us that something doesn't look right in their browsers instead of telling them that they have a crap browser just fix your fucking code. That being said I do expect them to be using a recent version of a browser, don't ask me to code for Netscape 4, lol.

Actually I've become a real fan of Mozilla, especially after I changed its prefs to tell it to always show tabs and to load new tabs in the background. Going down the board and loading each thread that I want to read into a new tab by doing a right mouse click on it as I go down a read the board rocks.

Here's another one (like the 11% of visitors to my main site)!

I thought it to be normal that a decent webmaster checks their pages in various browser platforms; I check mine in IE 6, Netscape 7, Modzilla, and with new lay-outs/major changes I try to make sure that they display in an acceptable manner (doesn't have to be perfect) in Netscape 4.7 and Opera.
But I can't believe how many galleries I get submitted which are nothing but a -b-l-a-n-k- page in Netscape 4.7 (due to sloppy page set-up)...
