What should I expect from my host?

My host switched my server resulting in my pages being "temporarily down for updates" for anywhere from 1 -24 hours depending on the ISP. While the pages were technically online, they were also technically offline from my point of view.

Many link lists and TGP's removed my links as a result, killing my potential sales and traffic.

I want to ask my host about it, but don't want to come across as an asshole with some unreasonable demand for compensation. I don't even know if I'm entitled to compensation, in the sense that I don't know if they could have made it smoother on their end, or if this just happens when your host changes your server.

Also, I'm not sure what to do about the TGP's and if there's any hope in getting my links back, or if they would have just deleted them...

Usually there is not much you can do. Most host terms and conditions protect them from responsibility for losses from downtime.

Some hosts have given me a free month in the past, but this ain't that common.

Typically there's nothing you can do about lost listings but to resubmit.

I would get a new host cause they dont know what they are doing. Hell this whole site was switched over a few months ago to a new host and dont think anyone would have known if Greeny did not say something. Not even a fart in the transfer.

Sound like you need to find a good host. Four years with mine and the only time I have been down was because someone hacked my server. Was not my host's fault but they worked their ass off to get me back up. Even at that I think they credited me a month's fee. IMO, a one on one relationship with your host is valuable.

Well Said Chop that's one of the reasons Sparky has my business till the day one of us dies.
I get a couple emails a week from mainstream webmasters with hosting problems and look at all the threads on GreenGuy and Jim about hosting problems.
I'm a cheap bastard but I know better than to be cheap when it comes to Hosting. The money you think your going to save is going to cost you in the long run, I think Sparky's cheapesr package is $8 a month and your not packed in with so many sites on the same server that every one is slowed to a crawl like most packages in that price range.
The one and only time I've ever been listed on the Hun I got shut down for going over my bandwidth had to waite hours for the guy I was buying hosting from to get back home from fishing to get my account upgraded and then I got shut down again His wife tells me he's in the shower I'll have him give you a call when he get's out. a half hour latter my site goes back up an hour latter I get a call from my hosting provider and the guy tries to give me shit because I caused him to go over on bandwidth and his provider shut him down which shut everybody he was selling hosting to down, I started looking for real hosting the next day, fucking moron couldn't do simple addition and had me buffaloed into thinking he was a hosting company

I have to agree with Chop. Case in point. I use a company called naked hosting. If you look around on some of my posts I was looking for a new company trying to save a little $$. I saw some people here recommended webair. I went to them and well my nothing against them but my site did not run the same. I dont know if it was the DB or what but it ws never as fast as NH. I had to cancel and go back and now Im glad I did. In fact should have never left them, tech support is great but rarly needed. I forget how long I have been with them but never ever and issue. I was just being a cheap asshole at the time. $30 a month is nothing so I can sleep at night.

This sounds like a propagation issue...seems like I ran into this a while back when my host had to change some of my ips.

I've been in a bit of hosting hell today myself...so I feel your pain. But, if I recall correctly...there's not a lot your host can do about an ip taking time to propagate.

Frustrating as hell for sure though

That said, Chop is right on the mark! Having a really good working relationship with your host is critical in this business. That box is what pays the bills after all.

Glad I found this post it's a good questions koalat.

I switched my hosting a couple weeks ago and I've already had some downtime twice. A router apparently was being switched and another time something screwed up. I forget exactly what it was, but either way that seems like to much?

I'm not sure.

Update:

They have credited my account for 3 months and offered a sincere apology.

I'm really happy with this, if most places won't even credit you for one month and will just throw their "terms and conditions" at you then that makes this even better.
