Linking to other sites

If i want to link to site X from a blog or on my LL because i like the site and think it will be a useful for my surfers is it considered best to email the owner of the site and ask first?

Anyone who doesn't wan't you linking to them isn't serious.

Link away! Linking to pages because you like 'em is what makes the web The Web.

Edit: If they really don't want your traffic they can always redirect it anyway.

I once had a webmaster bitch at me for wasting her bandwidth, by sending her a lot of traffic that she couldnt manage to convert

Thanks Virgohippy kinda thought that would be the case but as i have only ever linked within my own network of sites thought it best to just put it out there and ask.

Most people would love for you to link to them and this would be uneccessary. But if you want, an email or ICQ after doing it probably would not hurt. They may decide to just go ahead and link back to you as well without you asking if they like you site (or otherwise believe in reciprocity). Long ago this was how things often worked when things were not as commercial in the business (when people often had sites primarily because they were interested in the subject, with money as a secondary concern).
