DMOZ extortion story - interesting.
An interesting story from from metafilter:
http://www.shoemoney.com/2007/08/26/dmoz-extortion/ "A while back I got a email from a guy claiming to be a DMOZ editor saying that I had to pay him $5,000.00 or he would have my site: shoemoney.com removed from the dmoz. I thought nothing of it…. then today I got a email from him saying it was removed and I might want to rethink not paying him. I thought I would check just for grins. It was removed… WOW dmoz… corrupt… no….. I never thought I would say this but I don’t even care anymore. I am stunned Google still uses this as there business directory as its the most corrupt “editorial” system EVER and especially since now they are trying to talk about paid links and crap… " http://www.metafilter.com/64218/DMOZ-Payola |

Don't get discouraged; it's usually the last key that opens the lock...

Very interesting indeed. Does not really surprise me though. I have never been able to get a site or page listed in that thing. I have tried several times and finally just gave up on DMOZ.

It is better to watch things then to do them

I got my link list in the variety page a couple monthes back. It took a little work.
I was told by the editors that because so many shitty sites were submitted, they didnt even want to go in to check and have to wade through the submits. They seem to be pretty picky too, they wanted me to change avs to AVS because it's proper english. I have heard stories of people emailing submitters and telling them it would be 200 bucks to be accepted or else they would decline. DMOZ actually takes it serious and if you send them the email and info, others have been kicked out and banned from editing. Now i'm just waiting for the dmoz to google transfer of new directory info which apparantly never happens. Brad |

Do you want the job done right, or do you want it done fast?
|
One totally corrupted directory. Forget about this shit, it doesn't matter nowadays.

I gave up on DMOZ years ago. After it appeared obvious that many of the people were only reviewing their own sites I started submitting applications to be a reviewer.
My favorite response was: "Your sample description is either too long or too short". |

Wheither you think you can or you think you can't, Your right.
|
My guess would be because the editor knew how rich that guy is. Wanted a piece of the pie.

Aw, Dad, you've done a lot of great things, but you're a very old man, and old people are useless
|
I'm an editor - but unfortunately I edit for the TGP section.

I luckily crossed paths with an editor that could go into any category, so they were able to review and add mine. My list is about 8 months old so i'm lucky to be in there.

There's Xanax in my thurible!
|
Specifically, these are the linklist categories:
http://www.dmoz.org/Adult/Computers/...nk_Sites/Free/ http://www.dmoz.org/Adult/Computers/...Sites/Variety/ I post these because like Brad I had to bookmark them or I'd never find them again and maybe someone else will look by searching for threads with DMOZ in it. They have dead linklists listed and refuse to take mine. Maybe I can bribe a reviewer with a spent condom and a playing card with peanut butter on the back of it. |

You can now put whatever you want in this space :)

Who gives a shit about dmoz anymore? -- "That's like so last century" $5000 bucks? What could a webmaster do to promote a site with $5,000? A lot more than a fucking shity dmoz listing. This is retarded - tardo - tard - tar(?)!
I wish to hell that Useless would respond to this thread! I guess I've had enough wine for tonight. Carry on, all of you. Carry on. ---art willliams |

Anyone remember when it was called NewHoo.com?
Just found my NewHoo editor confirmation email from July 1998. ![]()
