At this point, though America is (in theory) primarily Christian, it has become a cultural standard due to historical trends in medicine. It's actually relatively recent - by all accounts, coming into popular practice at birth in the twentieth century - but firmly entrenched in our visual standards. I can't say that one has had more or less problems than the other. Not that it really matters much, but we were nominally Catholic.
