Hosting company

I had sent a inquire to my hosting company as to amounts of daily transfer that I am allowed, as I am starting to post on the Hun. I received this back. And was wondering is this a good hosting plan I am on or not so good for our type of business?

"We offer 400000 hits per day per account. If the account receives hits of 300000 - 350000 they get warnings to take measures to prevent this high load and to prevent account suspension. After 400,000 hits we suspend the account, and it will be unsuspended untill the next day at 1.00 GMT.

This limit cannot be increased even at extra cost. We offer one standard hosting plan.

Also, all accounts are allowed to use 250 GB of transfer per day. If your site goes over this limit it will be taken offline until the next day (AM 01.00 GMT)"

Thanks Mike

You'd be hard pressed to get that even with the hun. Thats kinda sucky for a host though.

Epic Typo

uh. That's lame that there is even a limit. seriously.

webair, natnat, svwh, colo, are all amazing hosts that I've worked with.
I've heard great things about mojohost and phatservers.

There are others. I'm just going with what i've worked with and personal stories I've heard from trusted people about the other hosts.

Move your stuff.

Hmmm, 400K hits a day might be an achievement but I have certainly seen HUN listings pull down in excess of 250 Gbs/day .

Secondly the fact that your host can't grow with you would also be a concern to me. You have been developing your site for awhile would be my guess and the traffic has grown for your efforts but can you imagine the effect on all of your hard work if you were down for a day or more because you had exceeded your BW limit?

A quality host should be able to (and in fact be happy about) scale as you grow. If nothing else make sure you have a migration plan in place if you see yourself coming even close to their limit.

Good luck an please do keep http://www.Caro.Net in mind if you ever happen to decide to make a move.

Quality hosting will pay for itself.

Depends how they define hits. Some people [wrongly] refer to a single page load as a hit, but really, that's a visit. Some people refer to every element of your page as a hit, as in each thumb, banner, etc would be considered a separate hit. That's correct.

Quote:
A "hit" is actually a "successful request to your web server from a visitor's browser for any type of file, whether an image, HTML page, an MP3 file, or any other type. A single web page can cause many Hits -- one for each image included on the page, etc." ²

Therefore, if a single web page contains 20 images, that's 21 hits - 20 images plus 1 for the page itself. If one single person looks at 10 web pages which contains 20 images on each page, that single individual is responsible for 210 hits.
from http://www.kylake.us/www101/what_are_hits.htm

Quote:
Hits
Any request made to the server which is logged, is considered a 'hit'. The requests can be for anything... html pages, graphic images, audio files, CGI scripts, etc... Each valid line in the server log is counted as a hit. This number represents the total number of requests that were made to the server during the specified report period.

Consider that bolded portion when forecasting the amount of hits your gallery would expect per day. Also, I agree that you don't want a host that would shut you down when you are seeing heavy traffic, since that's the time when you want your site to be running its best. If it was a DDOS attack, that would be another issue.

There is one factor that you are missing -- the technical support. A host that will shut you down for going one hit over the ceiling is completely useless. You not only require a host that has room to grow, but one that can look at your stats and give you an honest answer and even give you some direction to save you money and time. It isn't always about dollars. See Useless Warrior's signature for my favorite.
