PC problem, no curser except in safe mode

I'm over a friends place on her WindowsME machine and if it boot normal there is no curser or mouse control, but you can navigate by the keyboard.

Mouse works normal in safe mode.

Any ideas as to what is up?

Sounds like it need the mouse driver updated.

If she recently installed something new then it could have caused a conflict with the results she is now experiencing. In that case remove it before trying to get a new driver.

Everyone I know always has problems with Windows ME. I was working on my buddies computer, (the printer wouldn't work along with other assorted problems). I uninstalled and re-installed the printer drivers and it worked fine for a few days, but then stopped responding again so ME is out the window and all is well. I bought it a few years ago and had read that Microsoft had abandoned it before it even hit the store shelves.

Try re-installing it if possible (the OS) or even upgrade it to XP pro. A new OS is always a pain in the ass, but I have two machines one using 98SE and one using XP and the XP machine will run for days or weeks with out any problems. The 98 machine always needs to be restarted at least once every day or two.

Check the connections for peripherals too..

mouse, vid, keyboard etc.. it a long shot but a simple solution.

The computer is infected with a bunch of crap.

In the end all she really wanted was her stuff off of it since she now has a laptop.

I logged into the machine using my Mac and copied all of her stuff off and burned it CD so she is happy and the machine is know unpluged and added to the great pile of used electronics that we all have. I'm sure a reformat and reinstall would fix it but she has no need for it anymore.

Hopefully she will not catch the viruses on her new Dell laptop when she copies the CD. It is all Word files and pics and she does have anti virus software on it.

This is what happens when you do a favor for an ex. LOL
