Gas Prices
I got this in one of those email chain letters:
"Subject: Join the resistance! I hear we are going to hit close to $3.00 a gallon by the summer. Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. Phillip Hollsworth, offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join with us! By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $1.97 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost! of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50- $1.75, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace....not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war. Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I am sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and ! pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If i t goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am ... so trust me on this one.) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can! make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK."

You know that local gas station with the big Mobile sign in front. Have you checked to see who actually owns that station? When I was doing consulting for Mobile over 80% of the gas stations were franchised. Most of the franchise owners owned less then 3 statiosn and many of them had 1.
Exxon and Mobile own oil wells. If they don't sell oil to the franchisers then they'll sell it to other oil companies. Guess what. Another oil company will buy the oil that comes from an Exxon tanker, convert it to gasoline and then you're still going to buy it. All you will do in put your local business man and all the people that he employs out of work and it will have little impact on Exxon and Mobile corporation. You'll put a few locals out of work and Middle Eastern oil moguls will never notice a thing. I'm sure that you've researched this before sending out this email and posting it on this board. The only way to crub oil prices long term is by curbing the demand for it and by helping the countries that depend on oil money expand thier economies in other areas. |

Yeah, I researched the fuck out of it. I called my mom, asked my neighbor, looked at some tea leaves.
Actually, I just got it in my email and thought it was interesting and posted it here. I wasn't trying to convince everyone to go out and boycott Exxon and Mobil. Sheesh dude, chill.

Gas prices are ridiculous even where i live in the boonies gas is $1.80 per gallon and the stations up here like to jack the price up when people come up for the weekends.
My dad was just out at our place in Las Vegas and they were saying out there that gas was expected to possibly go up to $5 per gallon this summer do to some oil refinery in Cali shutting down, truth or not, I don't know, fact of the matter is there is a lot more oil on our continent that we could be going after if the tree huggers weren't so damn picky about where we dig. |

We did hit $2.00 for Premium at Mobil the other day. I've used Premium Mobile for a long time - about 14 years ago I had a piece of shit 74 Nova that only ran on Premium (regular unleaded would just make it spit & sputter) I choose Mobil because my Dad gave me a Mobil Card to use for "emergencies" when I was going to college

I actually have no idea what I'm paying for gas.
I usually get my gas at the corner 7-11. About the only thing I look for is which button is marked 93 octane. I do know that it is usually just a bit under $35 to fill my Corvette's gas tank. |

Cleo - you're like me - I usually don't look, just pick up the nozzle & insert it into the tank
![]() But the 2 caught my eye the other day, which is the only reason I know it's over $2 - next time I notice, it'll be 3 ![]() |

About 5 years ago I spent 3 months in Eastern Europe on business. The hotel had a news service that would fax the latest headlines from USA Today.
One of my European friends was reading were gas prices were expected to reach $1.75 a gallon. Of course he bust out laughing becasue never saw gas prices below $2 a liter. The current price was about: $2.15 a liter * 3.78 = $8.12 per gallon |

No offence Apu, but when they were handing out religions you must have been out taking a whizz

We're paying $2.35/gallon out here in the Coachella Valley (near Palm Springs, California)... it's been hovering around $2 since the prices went "back down" last summer. I swear they just hike it up to nearly $3 so we will be happy when it goes back down to $2.50 and won't complain as much when it stays there. They boost it up, take it down a notch but then we pay a good 20-25 cents more from there on...
It's all a scam... Looking into the new 2004 Toyota Prius... http://www.toyota.com/toyota/vehicle.../ebrochure.jsp It gets 51 mpg hiway, 60 mpg city... I just do a lot of "soccer mom" type driving around town so this car would really suit our needs perfect, and might give me a good karma upgrade for all those years I drove an SUV. lol Driving a 2002 Camry now - it gets good gas mileage, but 60 mpg really catches my attention!!! |

It's varies between $4.25 and $5 a gallon here in Ireland......I always shop around at those prices it's a must. I'm not sure but I think we get better mileage out of our cars tho.

I remember the day when my driver told me that he can get a card to buy gasolin. That happened in old Soviet. I was glad, as I was tired to stay in quques at public roads waiting the tank car to come and sell gasoline.
I told him I can take the card and then he can use it. I didn't had to do that, as it was a card we had to pay before use. We payed 500 ruplas - that was what they want - and then we used it. After that we paid 500 more, LOL! BTW, I don't have a driving licence. Never have. EDIT: I don't know what gasoline paid. I didn't care. Now we have to pay appr. same as Fonz. I asked my wife, she drives our Alfa Romeo.

Nothing funnier than the ridiculous faces you people make mid-coitus

We were just talking about this the other day..
When we left atlanta in summer of 2002, our gas prices were anywhere from 98 cents a gallon to 1.29, max. We drove cross country and never paid more than 1.35 even in the most remote areas of South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. Get to Seattle, mere miles away from the oil fields in Alaska and we have a very hard time finding any gas for less than 1.69. Last big raise, it was well over 2.00. So much for my theory of being closer=less cost involved. I don't even care. I know people who drive around for hours looking for it 2 or 3 cents cheaper. If you can't afford the gas, take a bus. ![]() |
