suggestions on imap/pop3 servers

I have been trying to get my server fully up and functional but having problems with my retrieving emails. They are being sorted and that with postfix and mysql was trying to use courier-imap and I have not been able to get so i can log into my emails either via imap or pop3 which it is supposed to support both and they are on just not working properly.

Does anyone here have any suggestions on another imap/pop3 server i can use for this or why courier might not be working open for any suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

I don't have an answer to your mail server quagmire but I do have a question for you.

With as cheap as hosting has become why would you even be trying to do basic server stuff like this yourself?

Aw, Dad, you've done a lot of great things, but you're a very old man, and old people are useless

RedDevil...are you using a unix based system? (linux/bsd/etc)

A few things you can check

1) If your pop3/imap mail program is (x)inetd based (which it most likely is)...ensure you have an active setting in either the /etc/inetd.conf file or in the /etc/xinetd.d/ directory (if using xinetd)

2) Check your /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny files....make sure your IP has access to the mail services on your server.

Quick and easy setup is to put

ALL: put.in.your.ip

in the /etc/hosts.allow file...be sure to restart your inetd/xinetd to ensure the change takes effect (most systems do realtime checks so it usually isn't an issue).

If the pop3/imap mail program is running as a daemon...make sure it's actually running on your system =)

3) Check your server logs...most likely either /var/log/messages and/or /var/log/maillog to see if there's any indications why you are not able to access your server's mail setup.

It can get fairly expensive to get an ISP to do support (depending on your hosting plan that is)...many dedicated hosts charge extra for software installations/configurations they didn't initially install on the server....and usually at an outrageous hourly rate.

Of course if Red bought the server and the software was already on it....he should harass his ISP to check the server and fix it for him since they were the ones who put the software there.
