800x600.... why?
Hi Everyone,
What's the story with 800x600 free sites? How important to you all is it that the galleries fit within the screen without even a tiny bit of right scrolling? Does anyone know anyone that actually uses 800x600 resolution? As a side issue: let's have it from everyone- who has the biggest screen?!! Mine's an 18" TFT at 1280x1024 so i struggle to shrink galleries down without them looking a bit lost in the middle of the screen.

You can do a search this has been talked about alot here. But as far as having a hard time doing it thats pretty easy make a 800 pixel table and don't go outside of it.or you can make your screen size 800x600 and build that way.Personally I never make tables bigger then 650,700 max.
There are alot of folks that buy new puters that have 15" monitors and are defaulted at 800x600 and most never change it from that unless they get 19" or higher monitors |

here are some numbers from my site
1 1024 x 768 54.94% 628 2 800 x 600 26.95% 308 3 1280 x 1024 9.80% 112 4 1152 x 864 3.50% 40 5 1600 x 1200 2.89% 33 6 Unknown 1.22% 14 7 640 x 480 0.70% 8 as you can see a few people still use 800x600 Fred

Most people do not keep their browser window full screen.
800x600 is about the same width as we are used to on printed paper. |

All the stats I've seen say that the vast majority of surfers, including myself, keep their screen at 800x600. It ought to be the standard for design, but so many numb nuts out there want to push it wider just because their screen can view 7000x6000. Many sites designed larger than 800x600 are illegible because the designers didn't bother to use larger fonts. And why didn't they use larger fonts? Becasue the larger fonts look idiotic to those of us still at 800x600, aka the majority of the human population.
Also, wider screens mean wider graphics and that means more bandwidth.

It's not so hard to keep things inside 800px but make things a bit bigger to appeal to users of higher resolutions.
Within a couple years 1280x1024 will grow quite a bit I think. I just swapped out my cousin's monitor and she went from 800x600 to 1280x1024. As LCD's get cheaper and become more common place, the higher resolutions will catch on. But there will always be people who stick to those shit resolutions due to older eyes. 800px width won't go away for a long while. |

I haven't tested this because I don't use windows, so I don't know.
If you choose 1024x768, but use their large fonts, do you still get the effect of an 800x600 page? Pictures would be smaller of course, but the fonts being larger might still cause issues.

i build my free sites always on 800x600, for me i dont care you build you free sites bigger , but i only see free sites 4 pages and all 4 pages an different width, it sais to me bad coding, not good if you dont know how to code your pages, a mistake with one page oke , but with 4 pages of your free site all and different size ..its just bad coding, the big problem i see on index pages, most of the time the table with receips back to linksites is to widht, if you know something about coding you know to smaller the receips also. i see very good sites but the different size on each page sucks.

It really has nothing to do with the length of the page, so stop talking about 600
![]() As far as the width, 800 is my rule & my surfers seem to like it. |

1024x768 29983749 (54%)
800x600 15480923 (28%) 1280x1024 5775711 (10%) 1152x864 1788147 (3%) Unknown 1278074 (2%) 1600x1200 474466 (0%) 640x480 331757 (0%) Fairly decent sample for January 2005. While 800x600 is becoming a smaller percentage all of the time, it does still make good sense to cater to the least common (within reason) denominator. I also use 1280x1024, and yes 800 width looks a little silly parked in the middle, lol.. you can use a background image to fill in the gap if you want though.

You know, you can build sites & pages that fit at 800 wide & then change the table width from 750 pixels to 100% and be safe with everyone

As for resolution. I get asked alot to check out peoples computers. Its funny how many non computer literat people have their computers res set at 800x600. Even more funny how they freak when you change it to a higher res and they want you to switch it back because they think it is smaller. ![]() |

SOME people have poor eyesight. 800x600 is better. You can use Mozilla Firebird and get the Developer's Plugin and w/ a click of a button, have your browser set to 800x600. I use it a lot

I have thought about it (and published the same numbers in another discussion elsewhere), and I have come to the following conclusion:
(I'll use Tom's numbers' they are handy): 1024x768 29983749 (54%) 800x600 15480923 (28%) If 54% fo the people have 1024, and 28% have 800... well, 82% can handle both! If you add in the other pieces: 1280x1024 5775711 (10%) 1152x864 1788147 (3%) Unknown 1278074 (2%) You can see that 97% of the people can see a site in 800 X 600. Only 3% can't. Move to 1024 X 768, and suddenly 31% of the surfers can't see the site correctly. Move to 1280 X 1024, and 80% of the world can't see your site correctly. At the end of the day, until the 800 X 600 drops down to maybe 20%, I don't think it will be time YET. Christmas 2005, probably. Maybe as soon as September. Alex |

Hi Rayzor
![]() I think Raw Alex said it best. You want as many people as possible to see your site correctly, so 800 it is until that %age drops down a great deal. I browse at 1024, and it seems the majority of surfers do, by the numbers here and my own stats, and sites set at 800 dont look too bad at all at that resolution. |

I generally have my settings at 1024x768 on a large 22" monitor. Most of the time my actual browser windows windows are set at about 800x600.
I generally also drop a 800px wide bar across the screen when I am laying out a page, just so I color inside the lines. I mainly only use the higher 2000+ settings when I am programming or doing graphics, and have multiple helper windows open. |

She would always say "you made it small again!". So I made a few adjustments to make everything bigger and she got used to it. Now she freaks out at 800x600 ![]() |

Also, remember that a number of people who surf at 1024 X 768 run a larger font, effectively screwing up any layout you had in mind.
It's all fun! Alex |
