Have you lost of art of talking to the surfer?

Well let’s think about this for a bit. Have you really thought about what you saying to the surfer when you’re writing text?

As you all know I review few sites and I am seeing a trend of just “ENTER HERE TO SEE” type links and less of romancing the surfer or stroking them into the sale are you really willing to leave it up to the tour to sell them or are you going to make the pre sale?

I would love some input on this

I most always try and talk and convince them I am there friend and am really showing them a good site and a good deal.. the way I look at it is.. most LL have the links under "free" and its hard to sell them no matter what you say and can type till your fingers fall off BUT when that friendly text is seen by the se surfers - that = $$$ sales BUt over do it and have it all mix together and it will be worse than a plain page with a banner and pictures on it IMHO..

The thing I don't like is the lack of creativity in the adult industry.

Take for example freesites, I'd say a good many are just a cookie-cutter template slapped with a "Gallery 1" "Gallery 2", and a few sponsor links here and there. That's it.

Be creative. I find that my conversions skyrocket if I take a more personal approach, and design a freesite in such a way so that it has that personal 1st-person talking feel.

Also, if you have writer's block, I find that JizzHut.com has the inspiration to juice up the perverted thoughts a little.

Some of their descriptions are so cleverly written.

The situation is a bit more complicated than that.

My experience is that sometimes a simple approach works just as well as a story/personal touch approach to getting the click and the sale.

I've been amazed at how often a very simple sales text get's the sale.

It often depends on where in the site you are placing the ad. And the overall sales concept of the site.

I take it on a site by site basis for my own. I try to create a vibe for each site and work it in in different ways and elements. Often trying to work a smile or a laugh. Sometimes they get rushed though too as far as the last few text links or whatnot if it`s a site that`s been on the burner a while.

I have seen enough of the plain enter this site text you mention though. It could be that in between the real good site builders and the absolute shit spammers there are alot of webmasters that are just middle of the road. Some have the tech stuff down pat but can`t even match an ad to their site. Some have sex in their blood but could`nt write an email let alone html. Perhaps they are a good portion of the "get rich quick mentality" webmasters that have not reached the wall yet. The learners who are not there yet. And of course weak tired templates.

Always good to check yourself though!

I used to get all hung about making good ads, then I realised that sales are more a function of traffic numbers than salesmanship... it's that 80/20 thing. A simple ad that takes 20% of the work required to make a "good" ad will still get 80% of the clicks that the good one would have... you are trading a lot of time for those last few percentage points of CTR and a better ratio. I'd rather spend that time using 20% techniques to get more traffic... it's all about the numbers.

I always try to write good sales text and just use a banner for its visual attraction to pull the surfer into my sales text.

But the thing is, it only takes a few more minutes (and some brain power) to crank out some creative writing.

Traffic numbers do come into play, but what's the use of bulk traffic if none of them will click on an enticing link?

When building free sites (which I don't do nearly enough of) I always use a lot of text with strategically placed banners...sometimes I feel like too much. I try to balance my pitch between telling them what the sponsor site is offering and trying to get them worked up. I agree that most free sites rely way too much on banners. If I'm using a given banner or graphic ad I try to match the sales text to what the ad is showing to (hopefully) increase the impact of both.

I think you have to do something different.

For example, I posted my Geo IP thread on another board with the title "This is a PHP test - Do NOT click here".

One webmaster said "It's reverse psychology. When it says don't click, people just click".

Another said "hehehehehe its toooooo damn hard not to click".

One thing that always has worked for me - if you look at the Sunday newspaper sales ad copy - look at what they are using to entice/sell in short sentences
The second thing I do is try to write text which becomes an extension of the paysites tour page - matching text to their tour text (if its worth a shit) seems to work well

On the same note, having a similar design/color scheme to the paysite tends to work in favor of higher conversions.
