Why not focus on the one that has the most potential to meet your own needs?

ferite is very close to embedded C http://www.ferite.org/
Then there's the mono project, which is C# http://www.go-mono.com/

SexyCityGlen,
you mentioned you knew C -- those two are pretty close. If I was a gambling man, I would probably focus on C# over ferite. If you don't have much control over your hosting solution, then, use php. If you only have moderate control, mod_perl or mod_python would be the way to go. mod_python is a bit better designed, was embeddable from the start, but, again, finding people that know python is a bit tougher. It really depends on your short and long term goals. If you have simple tasks, then you really can't beat the ease of development in php and the ability to hire guys relatively inexpensively to do things. If you use C#, you considerably reduce the size of your talent pool -- and that will raise development costs at least in the short term.

Perl vs PHP

Learning PHP or Perl is equivalent in your time/mind consuming IMHO. P.S. see how many current sites use PHP. GG&J forum based on PHP also. http://www.php.net/docs.php is a good place to start with. |

The most dificult thing is to be very familiar with their most of their libraries and functions. But this is not considered a language issue but extensions. |

My vote is for PHP: simple, clear C-like syntax and extremely rapid development for quick and dirty web apps and shell scripts, and fast time to market... PHP earns.
Perl has a much larger base of libraries that are ready for you to use though. |

When it comes to web apps...
I get more satisfaction out of Perl. I get work done faster in PHP.

SexyCityGlen: Personally, I like PHP for web work. After working in programming for over 30yrs. I learned probably about 20 languages, plus multiple dialects. Only actually use about 5 of them on a regular basis though. Looks like the next one on the list is Fusion. Good luck with the programming, it can be a good challenge! |
