Sex and Teddy Bears Dominate Summer Art Show

A giant dominatrix and a pair of menacing teddy bears are on display at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition.

The larger-than-life dominatrix, on sale for £88,000, is made of hundreds of dominoes.

Scottish artist David Mach has also created Grizzly Little F*****, a fluffy teddy bear with a menacing expression crushing kittens under its feet and brandishing plastic guns.

The teddy in his other work, Grizzly Little F***** (the Silence of the Lambs), is crushing small fluffy lambs.

The annual Summer Exhibition is the world’s largest open-submission contemporary art show and the theme this year at the Royal Academy of Arts is printmaking.

Artists whose work is also on display include David Hockney, sculptor Anthony Caro and former Turner Prize nominees Tracey Emin and Langlands and Bell.

Hockney has submitted six full length life-size portraits, including one self-portrait.

RJ Kitaj has three paintings in the show, which are described as musings on old age.

They include an erotic scene in a bathtub, and another, Lot and His Daughters (After Cezanne).

A highlight of the show is the life-size standing figure made up of horizontally placed acrylic sheets each printed with the image of a section through the body derived from a MRI scan.

There is also a 30ft drawing, Rock and Sea Anglesey, by Leonard McComb.

Gillian Ayres, Georg Baselitz, Ann Christopher, Michael Craig-Martin, Jim Dine, Lucian Freud and Colin Self have been shortlisted for the £25,000 Charles Wollaston Award for the most distinguished work in the exhibition.

The exhibition opens at the Royal Academy in Piccadilly on June 7 and runs until August 15.
