Help to re-organize

I have only been in this biz a couiple of months, I knew nothing of this 2257 bull when I started.
One thing I do need is to be able to operate legally and simply.
So I am going to move my server to a country where there is no effect from 2257.
As well I am not so happy with the domain name I chose.
So I am going to change that too.

1- How easy or hard is it to redirect to the new server / new name ?
2- How long should I redirect for ?
3- How do I inform the link lists that I am going to be changing and that they need to update the link they have?

The idea is to make the changes while pissing off as few of the link list people as possible.

I have stopped building and submitting sites for now.

Any thoughts, opinions, suggestions or help is always appreciated.

1 - It's pretty easy - most host will help you with setting up the new one & redirecting the old one

2 - DNS usually propagates in 24-48 hours, but it does take a little longer in some cases.

3 - Are you getting a new domain or just moving the one to a new host? If it's the latter, then, in theory, you won't have to notify anyone (assuming things are set up properly)

I am getting a new domain name as well.
Also I would like to correct some of the newbie directory structure mistakes I made when starting out.
This will affect the link lists as well.

Even if your servers are outside the us, if you live and have your office in the us and do biz here, you are liable.

No I am outside of the USA

It is still going to be a hassle.
As I said I am not in the biz very long, but I'd hate to lose all the work I've done up to now.

So ......anyone know the procedure for letting link list owners know that the URLs I submitted are going to change?

Thanks again for all your input.

In the best case I move all the work from the old domain to the new one, and get the URLs updated on the link lists.
Then I forget about the old domain.
I really don't like the name anyway, typical newbie mistake.

Why not move the old domain/sites to your new host and just leave it, and make all your new submits from the new domain? This way you won't have to send 100 e-mails and you avoid pissing anybody off.

That's what I would I suggest. Just leave the old sites alone and start submitting with the new domain. Just remember to use the same email address that you used before. They don't like it when you change addresses.... it sets off alarms.

As for the actual move, just don't wait until your billing cycle is over at your old host, so you can leave the sites up on both for a few days to a week and you should be pretty much covered.

Newbie question:
Can I run 2 domains off the same low priced hosting package?

I though I would be restricted to one. I really do not want to take a second package until I make enough mistakes and start to actually make some money.

Thanks Trev for your suggestions.

Depends on your host, you would have to check with them, but my (very low priced) hosting certainly allows it.
