WTF ASACP?

I get yet another fucking mail today, that's 4 in about 10 days now:

email subject:

l**tle lo***as n*de free ph**os

body:

Welcome,Sir!
Secret Nymphets of erotic site!

photo series

http://editedoutbyme

Extreme sets of
ve*y y***g hot n******s playing with your desires:

* large free tour
* new galleries added
* full confidentiality

So head over to asacp :

http://www.asacp.org/report.php

I do not want to click this link, I do not want to see whether they are pics, videos, or both, I do not want to see what the content type is, nor the age, I want to report possible sick scum.

Where the fuck can I do this? I got 4 of these damn mails sitting in my inbox, that turn my gut every time I see the subject line. I won't delete them until I've reported them somewhere so if anyone can give me a link to someplace where they can be looked into I'd sincerely appreciate it.

On a side:

When did ASCAP change their name, and why? Their site now says "Association of Sites Advocating Child Protection". Was the original group name too edgy or something?

---

PS: It's also weird that ASCAP promotes an internet filter review site from this pack of nutters: http://www.nationalcoalition.org Personally, if I was trying to filter my kid's access, I'd want to know if my recommendations were coming from right wing god fanatics who offer information to "affirm biblical truths on a range of moral and ethical issues". A lot of internet filtering services are seriously backwards, as they censor information about everything from breast cancer to birth control to coming out queer. (Yes, under 18s do need access to information about how to use condoms or what to do if they think they're gay.) I surely wouldn't trust religious fanatics to advise anyone as to how to censor their internet, and it's too bad that ASCAP is giving them linkage. Maybe they could do their own run-down of internet filtering services from a more secular viewpoint, including telling parents if a filter is faith-based and blocks homosexuality and reproductive health information.

As far as the name change - here's the press release: http://www.asacp.org/press/pr030205.html

For reporting - while a report to ASACP is a good idea - for people that live in the US the law states that you have to report them elsewhere:
42 U.S.C. 13032 – REPORTING OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY BY ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION SERVICE PROVIDERS

Whoever, while providing an electronic communication service or a remote computing service to the public through a facility or means of interstate or foreign commerce, obtains knowledge of facts or circumstances from which a violation of certain offenses involving child pornography is apparent, must report those facts or circumstances to the [CyberTipline] at the National Center for Missing [&] Exploited Children as soon as is reasonably possible

Now - one of the things that ASACP does is to look at the content and report it to the NCMEC if they determine it to be true cp - that said - with the amount of people that use that type of text in an email to lure people in - in 90% of the cases it is not cp
If you look at the stuff to see - then report it immediately if it is, then "normally" you would be protected under the law. ASACP assumes that you have already looked at the material when you report it as just reporting something based on linking text isnt justification

Which is an interesting problem for Canadians. Just having that stuff in cache is enough to cause problems.

I don't report those sites much anymore because I can't take the legal risk of actually finding the stuff to ASACP's satisfaction.

I hear ya there, although in my case it's a case of I just plain don't want to look. Selfish as it may sound, I haven't volunteered, applied, or been 'trained' (as much as one can be) to be seeing that. I (selfishly) want someone else to click that link and see what it is.

Linkster, I hear you loud and clear, I realise as you say it probably isn't what I hope it isn't. At least I hope so, anyway. If it is though, well, y'know, I'd love to be able to pass the email, headers and all, to a body that will check it out.

Is it too much to ask? (btw that's just me 'thinking' aloud) ...surely looking at a thousand possibles to weed out the one definite is worth it?

Sorry GG & Jim to harp on, it's not my intention to make a crusade or anything on your board, just burns me when I get that shit. I'll shut the fuck up, and just say if anyone in the UK has a phone number to anywhere that *may* look into this, that'll do for me

Totally agree with ya Jel...

I HATE getting those mails, and like you...don't have the stomach to check em out myself. Linkster is right of course, not many of them are 'real'. But, the whole concept is vile

Sure wish we had a resource where they would check all reports of such things and weed out the ones that require follow up and summary castration of the perpetrators.
