Earthquake hits near us

So I am doing some cleaning up in the basement about an hour or so ago and feel a shake and rumble. I'm like WTF was that? Wife calls me from neighbors house all freaked out. People are calling the radio station.

Turns out a 4.5 earthquake hit in Buckingham Quebec which is a short drive from here. Man it was weird.

I lived in the San Francisco area for a time. It's definitely an odd sensation when the earth moves.

I went through one of those a few years ago in Arizona. What made it worse was that it was about 2 or 3 in the morning. That's a hell of a thing to wake up to!

I lived in California for a few years in the early 80s and just could never get used to Earthquakes. I had a 1978 z28 so of course I needed the best alarm I could find And, it had a motion detector. So, obviously, every earthquake made it go off. It pissed my neighbors off so much that I kept it turned off. Then my car stereo was stolen

Ohh Ram.. not good!!

Glad it wasn't a bad one. I know from some of spud's earth science stuff that scientist think the fault lines that run from NY State up through Canada are going to have increased activity. back in the 80's we had some tremors even felt in Manahattan which is on a Rock so Be careful.

You might want to add rockers to your new additions.

Very bizarre feeling for sure. Here is the short news clip:

The Ottawa Citizen
Published: Friday, February 24, 2006

An earthquake rattled Ottawa on Friday evening.

Residents reported the ground shook for about 30 seconds.

Natural Resources Canada said the magnitude 4.5 earthquake occurred at 8:39 p.m. and struck seven kilometres north of Thurso, Que., about 40 kilometres east of downtown Ottawa.

The U.S. Geological Service said the quake occurred about 15 kilometres underground.

The shaking was felt in as far west as Arnprior, as far east as Hawkesbury and in Chelsea, Que., about 20 kilometres north of Ottawa.

"It started as a rumble, then shaking ... the whole house was shaking and the glasses were rattling," said Jeff Thiessen, who lives in Manor Park.

Ellen Thompson, who lives in Manotick, said she was sitting on her waterbed watching television.

"There was a swell in the waterbed going on here. The ceiling fan .. was not on, but it was vibrating."

Robert Chaffers said he thought snow was sliding off the steel roof of his Chelsea home. "We could here it coming for several seconds before the house shook," he said, adding that it was "like a gigantic truck or something coming down the road."

There were no immediate reports of any damage or injury.

Had one in Indiana when I was a teen, scared the crap out of us with the way the house started shaking we thought a tornado was coming.

They say there is a fault line near Kansas City that is just waiting to have a "big one".

I lived in Northridge CA in 1994... Now THAT was an earthquake.

But however, not to downplay the one you experienced.... a 4.5 in an area that isn't set up to handle earthquakes is bad too.

I'll take hurricanes any day over quakes

Hope that was the last one you feel for a long time Ramster.

I was visiting a client in N. Calif years ago. Up near Carmel, maybe Salinas. Anyway, the point is that his wife was walking into the living room with a tray of drinks for us. She stops, raises her finger in the air, looks up and to the side, and says, "hang on just a second, honey, one's coming." She freezes there like a manequin. He sits in his chair, frozen, waiting. All of a sudden the house trembles and things move a little. Then quiet. She says, "okay, that's all," and brings us our drinks. He picks up the conversation like nothing happened. Never did find out how she did that.

Wow, this is the first I hear of it.. I need to get out more. It is such a rare occurance for these areas to get earthquakes, but always suprising and shocking when we do get one. Thanks for sharing the info.

Funny thing is it wasn't scary at all. It really only happened for a few seconds, maybe 20 seconds I'd guess and then it was over. I happened to be in the basement so I'm sure the upstairs was hit harder feel wise than I got in the basement.

My wife was freaking out but she was at the neighbors in the front room so they felt it all.
