Our local news local football play of the week

I am just looking for your opinion about this.
Our local news station has a local Football Play of the Week.
This week was a player that called for a fair catch after a punt. The other team saw it but the officials didn't. So, they didn't blow any whistles. But, the other team, let down their guard. The player catching the ball, not hearing a whistle, caught it and ran back for a touchdown.

I understand it was legal but, is it really something that should be called Play of the Week? And, if it was the NFL, would it be a reviewable play?

The only plays in the NFL that are not reviewable are "judgment plays" such as stop of forward motion, pass interference, offside etc.

If he called for fair catch and the refs missed it, in the NFL they would have reviewed it and he would be ""down" where he caught the ball.

I just find it hard to believe anyone can miss a fair catch single, and yes, he should be down the second he caught the ball, and if I was him, Id be VERY careful about calling a fair catch for the rest of the season since I'm thinking he will be whacked each and every time.

was this HS ball?

Yeah, High School. Really the part that pisses me off is the news calling it the play of the week. I mean, what does that really teach the players in High School.

I think I will call in on Friday when they take calls from viewers. They usually have one person call and have to kill time for the rest of the 10 mins. I have no doubt that I will get through.

You can't really blame the kid. They are all taught to not stop playing until they hear a whistle. He just did what he was taught.
