Exclamation Is sattelite internet good enough?

Hi everyone,
We are looking at buying a house in the country and there is no cable out in the sticks. Apparently, our only option would be sattelite. Has anyone here used it, and were you happy with it? We use ftp pro for uploading to our server, will there be any problems there? I have a million questions, but will stop there...

A friend of mine used dish and cussed it all the time. He was using dial up more than his dish connection.

I don't have cable here either but we do have dsl. Maybe that would be an option for you.

Well, I don't see where I will have much of a choice. It's either sattelite or dsl. Toss a coin, lol.
Thank you for your input...

The last time I looked at satellite all you could do was download. You still needed a land line for uploads to work.

I had satellite for 2 and a 1/2 years before moving back to Dallas in May. If you get satellite, go ahead and get yourself a dial up as well for backup purposes. As Major Stress mentioned, I used dial up 85% of the time because my satellite was constantly going up and down. Maybe I just had a bad experience with Hughes...

If I had a choice between DSL & Satellite, that is not a hard choice for me. Take DSL.

SirMoby, it's the same as any other internet, you can download/upload, and the speeds are decent (compared to dialup) when it works right.

this service: http://www.ricochet.com/ is supposed to be some wireless satellite high speed internet. It's in limited locations. It's a form of satellite internet but is not satellite tv.

I just bought a new house and before I found this one we REALLY like another one but there was no high speed available. Simple solution, we ddin''t buy it. I am not sure how much you do online for income but my income is 100% from online and there was no way I was moving to a house without high speed.

DSL is not available everywhere but if it is I hear it is almost as good as cable in some cases.

Thank you easymama, but it's not available here. I appreciate the link though.

Thank you all, your info has been helpful. I guess it's going to be a trial and error thing for awhile...

I've got Comcast cable as my main ISP and Earthlink ADSL as my backup ISP. Last hurricane my cable got knocked out for around six weeks but my ADSL stayed up however many of my neighbors also lost all their phone lines. Since I live in hurricane hell I've thought of getting satellite instead of ADSL as my backup to cable or even as a third backup.

We moved out in the country few years back, cable not even that close, but I was surprised dsl was. We almost bought a sat system, even paid for it until last minute found out about dsl. The thing that bugged me about sat, was the price of the equipment, was like $900, maybe thats changed.

The equipment is still outrageous, but they will let you pay it out.

My opinion of satellite isp..

Thank you all,
We appreciate your input very much. I suppose we will have to see what happens. We don't run any live feeds, just weekly updates to several sites. We will definitely keep you all informed as to how well it works out for us. Of course it may take a few weeks to come to that conclusion. As far as cost goes, These days the equipment and installation can be free. It just costs twenty dollars a month more for the service. The advantage to free equipment is that makes the sattelite company responsible for any repairs or replacement after the warranty expires. I think, for eighty dollars a month, we will give it a try.

Thank you all again,
Darian
