Is this banner too big?

Dear Linklist owners,

I am working on a new site and it should be ready for submission later today, but before I do that I want to know if the banner on this page is too big, I don't wanna submit crap, so better safe than sorry!

This page is not finished at all...just wanted to show you the banner!

Kind regards
Sodo

I've had a couple lists reject sites for using my own custom banners that were similar a size. Although I didn't notice the loss in traffic, I only stopped doing it for reasons of good will.

Looks pretty big to me despite being on a 30" screen.

Page took a long time to load. 131 kb for a banner is much larger then what I would use.

Also I'm not sure using png images is a good idea although I'm not sure as I don't submit stuff using them myself.

Lots of people will say it isn't but I say it IS!

It's a waste of 'real estate' and means the surfers has to scroll to find the enter link...

Understood, I myself is on a 1024x768 I believe and yes it's pretty big in my mind too, but considering that 1024x768 is probably low res today I thought someone else would have another opinion!

Seem to me that Cecash's banners are quite big in size as well!

I'll get rid of the Cr.. then - thanks for the comments :o)

Saved me time submitting a site that would be rejected anyway - thanks guys and girl :o)

Kind regards

Hi Cleo,

Regarding the .png that should be a standard now a days, but you're right that they can turn up as just a grey area if you use them as background images in some browsers.

But besides that small problem there should be no problems that I know of - please enlighten me if you have heard otherwise :O)

Kind regards
Sodo :o)

Nothing wrong with png. I use them myself on my non submitted stuff like inside of member areas. It is the default format of screen grabs on a Mac so it makes life easy for me. That being said the file size seems to be bigger then using jpg. Would be nice for doing stuff requiring transparence but fucking IE gives them grey backgrounds so I use gif which doesn't look as good but has transparence with everything.

Haven't tried using png in submitted stuff in years but years ago when I did some scripts rejected my stuff because of them. I don't know if this is still the case.

Hi Cleo,

Yeah you're right it was the transparency I thought of as well, I seem to be able to keep the pngs ok down in size. :o)

I will try and submit and see if anyone would reject a site using a few pngs for personalizing the site a bit. I got tired of looking at my all text sites(no homemade graphics), but I don't want to switch build time for personalization, right now I think I spend enough time thinking of new free site designs - I am struggling a bit in my mind they quickly all look the same - which is boring and you, greenguy, DD and the likes should not start thinking the same way as I do so I get rejected for using templates...which I'm not! ;o)

It's hard fitting it all in there, text for SE's, recips to fit the design, and marketing the sponsors, it's a kind of a jigsaw puzzle to me to make it all fit together nicely.

Well I am doing a few changes here and there and get ready to submit.

Thanks all for pointing out your views on the big banner etc. :o)

Kind regards
Sodo

Hi Again,

I finished the site - changed the banners to something smaller(both kb and px) and finished it up, I actually think it turned out nicely, here's the final result:

http://www.timeforcunt.com/lesbiancuntlickers/

DD what do you mean by waste of 'real estate' - Is text links selling better without the banners? a site without any banners would look kinda empty in my opinion. :o)

Kind regards

I would list it. The colors are a bit hard to look at in my opinion, but other than that I see no problem with it.

(but then i am not as strict as some of the other guys & gals here.)

Hi Jester,

I have darkened the banners a little bit to make the text stand out more, but still keeping that graphic look of the banners. It's seems no one clicks banners anyway, may be they're too dark?

Kind regards
Sodo

Hi Jester,

I believe that making them a bit dark will make the visitors pay more attention to the banner and the text beneath the banner....It's kinda give them something different approach and see if that works - Never saw anyone else darken the banners so I thought it was worth a try...I can always "undarken" them it's just setting the opacity style and then with a div with a black background surrounding the banner.

So if someone like GG, DD, Cleo, Richard or other link list owners does not like it I can easily switch them to their original look.

I can see it has both gotten harder to drive traffic to your site(linklist traffic not as high as in the old days - probably due to a lot more sites listed so my sites disappear among the others) and gotten a lot harder getting the visitors to click on a sponsor link.

I have to say that my first site with darkened banners seemed to work - but that could just be a coincidence - have to try a few more to see what happens - if they click the sponsor links but does not buy then it doesn't matter at all of cause...and so far I have not had a single signup in my first two weeks after my 4 year break from the biz...I'm starting to think that I've lost the touch becoming a father and family man...

But I am waiting to see what happens when I get picked up in the SE's.

and I have started designing my first wordpress blog and see how that works.

Kind regards
Sodo
