American Ex-Pats Slinging Porn?
May be an off question, but one of my big ole goals in life is to either move to the EU or backpack for a couple of years and live off of both residual site income and the work I do at internet cafes/wifi spots across the continent.
I'm just wondering.... Are there any Americans out there who've successfully done the same? I mean, w/ wires to an american bank account, one's atm/debit card can move you along for a while. This may be fantasy, but I'm imagining a nice little laptop w/ wifi strapped to my back, along w/ a list of friendly cybercafes. . . Oh and if anyone can point me to a list of wifi spots in major european cities, I'd be much greatful.... |

Just think about the exchange rate and how much money you lose in having to convert USD into whatever, Euro's, pounds etc... |badidea|

Wireless technology and high speed access is changing constently. 5 years ago wireless in major sities was expensive and spotting at best. Today you can take a wireless network any where in downtown Charleston and providing you have a password to connect to you can get Internet access through the college. Any student, any time, any where in the city. Back packing in the middle of no where you will still be hosed. I woud bet that you could do it today but every year it will become easier as technology changes. |

Some useful info. I was under the impression from a Brit that I had a brief business thing with that the US to UK exchange was horrible and that he lost lots of money due to that fact. But then again I found out not long after that he was a big FAT LIAR.
I'm not bitter, honestly... |pissed| |

I wouldn't be needing too much. I mean, sometimes I'd want to splurge a little, but I did a 3 month backpacking trick after college back in 99, and spent less than 50 a day on average, for everything. I figure I may be able to rent a room for a few months as a base of operations. . .
![]() Anyhow, the exchange rate is defintiely a concern. |

I've had the same dream. Mine is more of a dream of being completly "off the grid". Imagine...nobody knowing where you are or what you are doing. No taxes, no bills, nobody wanting to borrow money...Just a man and his thoughts.
But then, I realyzed...I work on the grid so, that won't work ![]() |

eksites,
It's cool to have these ideas. ![]() I think the part about taking a little laptop around Europe and being able to hit wifi spots in order to work is not realistic. 1st, did you take a laptop with you before while backpacking? It will be an easy target for theives. You will claim to be careful and probably will. But, at some point you will lose your guard and bye-bye laptop. 2nd the exchange rates just won't be in your favor. If you really wanted to hit Europe again I'd plan on just working your ass off on building LOTS of free sites, and just save up enough money to stay there 3 months or whatever. Get someone to deposit your checks in the US and you can access your money via ATM. Now, if you really wanted your money to go far you could look into SouthEast Asia. ![]() Just a couple sales will cover 1 month's rent for an apartment. You've been to Europe. Go to Asia next. ![]() |
