I really dislike spam, but I too have a beef with the punishment. It's far more severe than necessary. If they really want to dissuade a financial venture like spamming, then punish them financially. And it comes right down to what you said about the government having a hard-on for the internet. They don't know how to control it, so they go insanely overboard. Of course, they do so knowing that their aol subscribing constituants are mindlessly cheering them on. If someone was spamming phishing schemes or shit like that, that steals from the unsuspected surfer, then prison terms would make a lot more sense to me.
