True... battery lifetime is a field occupied by... shall we say "creative" people
 I suggest reading tests of laptops. I read an article in a computer magazine some time ago about laptops sold here in Denmark. They did a good job pointing out which laptops had good battery life and which did not... along with all the other things they tested of course. Point is you need to see it in action - or at least read about somebody who has seen it in action
