MLB should start in may, run until late august, and have a reasonable playoff system that allows at least 16 teams to get into the deal. That would create interest and make it less likely that teams become mathematically eliminated by the all star break. 100 or so games in 120-140 days. Then 7 game series all the way to the end (1 week per series, 7 games in a row as needed). Done by mid to late october.

The only reason the season stays so long is so that team owners can find ways to make back enough money to pay those overpriced children to play the game.
