My advice, is to choose a niche market that you either enjoy yourself or otherwise know something about and build a site around that theme.

As for earnings, the days of easy money are long ago gone but if you're willing to put in the hours and learn how to generate and filter traffic, optimize pages for search engines, create ads, pages, and tours that convert, then you can make a very comfortable living.
