Betamax took a while to go away too. It was the most popular format for almost 8 years. And, it was Sony that introduced it. Of course the downfall of Betamax was that they couldn't make a good quality long playing tape.

If history repeats itself, one of the DVD formats will be able to do something that the other can't. And that will be the end of the other. But, that could take a few years. I can't see myself waiting that long. The hybrid is probably the way to go in the next year. As soon as the price drops a bit.
