Actually you have to remember that those statistics are all based on the serial killers who've been caught and studied. And so those projections are based on a pretty small subset of the 'all serial killers' group.

Looking at the statistics another way, it may be that the serial killers who started off killing small things are simply the ones most likely to be caught later. Which could mean there are is a large group of serial killers who've never killed small things...and never been caught.

Makes the whole bug crushing thing a little less scary, hunh?
