Google authorship and how it affects your website?

I was wondering if someone could give me a better explanation of how this works or tell me if I understand it at all. The way I understand it is that if you sign up for Google authorship through your Google plus profile and link your web sites back to your Google plus profile it does a few different things.

It does protect your content from being copied to benefit someone else on the Google search engine. Google will know the content is yours and ignore the other site because you claimed authorship already. The second thing it does is build up your Google authorship reputation and this is where I got lost… lol

Anyone?
