The way I see it, free counters have been useful in tersm of showing the referrers to a specific page. While my server stats give excellent statistics for each of my domains, they do not show the referrers to each specific page. For example, I may have 20 small free sites under a domain. If I submit all of them to a bunch of link lists, the best way to see which ones got listed is to use a counter on the front page of each free site. For all of my free sites, I like to go through them once every 6-12 months or so to see which ones are still listed, or if any have been dropped. Then, I resubmit or update links as necessary. If I do not have referrer stats for each page in question, the only way is to use google to search for return links, and that is a pain in the ass. I really miss hitbox, their free counter was excellent.
