im going tio buyu a domain name and hosting for my web site, how much bandwith does succefull web site need?

More than 20 gig, that's how much I used last month and I'm not successful.
 Seriuosly though, knowing what kind of website are you planning to start would help.

If you are new start with a basic plan, maybe 20-40Gigs. But get it at a host that does NOT charge for upgrading to the next plan they offer. Eventually you may need 100 gigs, then 1000 gigs and so on.
