I don't see any advertisement so why would you want to do this?

You may well get into trouble by letting people post pics that they may not own are aren't legal.

I see recips on your warning page. Did any of the LL actually list this site?

Hi Cleo,

Thank you for your advice. I just put it up, so there has been not time yet for being included. Advertising will come soon, depending on how the site does. what do you think?

Without going into the legal side.....

How will you know how the site does, if you are running no Advertising?

thanks for the input! that's why I'm asking you for suggestions, on advertising and traffic, and of course how do you like it.

Advertising will come but i think first traffic? there is no point to do advertising if i don't have any retainable traffic.

I would pursue another avenue, one that you have control over what is posted.

If you do decide to continue with this I would consult a lawyer first.

Wow, not only do I agree with that, but in just peeking at the first handful of pics I see 2 that have domain names listed on them (one appears to be blurred out down the side). If you don't have authorization to use those pics you are asking for boatloads of trouble.
I wouldnt worry about traffic at this point, nor advertising, I would be trying to decide what to put up that wasn't going to risk causing me legal issues.

I don't want to discourage you, but I have had http://www.ratedabooty.com up for almost two years and have not made enough money to pay for the bandwidth used. Traffic is hard to get because mostlink lists will not list voting sites - ask Greenguy. Another problem that you have, people just don't post pictures to these sites. Therefore, you are going to have to purchase your content or use sponsor provided content. If you do use sponsor content, you have got to have there banner on the same page with their content. I do not believe that your script is capable of handling this without much modifications.

IMO, if you are in this as a hobby and want to spent a couple of hundred a month on your hobby have fun. If you want to devote the time to earning money, submit galleries and free sites.

Thanks Chop that's a good advice, i appreaciate it. I'll see how it goes and take in consideration your advice. I liked your site by the way.

Question, is there any reason why you kept it running after two years if it doesn't generate any revenew? where do you get the money out of galleries and free sites?

Thanks.

ps: I'll modify the script include some sponsor's content.

Booty is sort of like a child. I am not proud of what it is doing, but I can not kick it out.

You get paid by a sponsor when a sale is generated from your gallery or free site.

Are you hosted on NT? Win2000? I didn't check it out but I noticed that you were using asp.

If you are hosted on Windows then you may get problems further down the line with regard to hotlinking. You don't wanna wake up with all your bandwidth stolen one morning.

Also noticed that you have disabled the right mouse button, which is another reason why you may not get listed on link lists, and there is an easy hack around anti-right-click.

Thanks Chop for the reply.

Urb, i'm running on xp server (behind a firewall), how does the bankdwith get stolen and what is hotlinking?

what does the right click disable have to do with not getting listed? you can always got to source (i don't think you want to do that for every image) other than that, what would the easy hack be?

thanks.

Hotlinking is when someone posts a page where they are calling up the images from your server. So lets say they do a gallery that gets listed on The Hun this will use up 20 gigs of your bandwidth per day.

It sounds like you are running a server at home on a cable modem or an ADSL connection so in this case it would basically shut down your internet connection.

We all use some flavor of UNIX to hosts our sites since that way you can use these files called htaccess to control what domains are able to link to your images.

Disabling right mouse makes it hard to review your site so that is why it is banned. Actually it does nothing at all for people like me who use a Mac, but that is a topic for another thread.

What Cleo said.

.htaccess can do many things including setting the server to only serve images on pages which are on your domain or IP.

You need to have Apache mod-rewrite installed on your server to make this work. It will protect your server's resources from being raped by a hot linker.

http://wsabstract.com/howto/htaccess10.shtml

Anti-right-click is your choice, but it will prevent you from being listed by the majority of link lists. I use it myself on sites which are not going anywhere near link lists or tgps. The hack around it using PC mouse should not really be posted on an open board. Not that it's a big deal.

Also more recent browsers have an image tool bar which will copy or print from an image bar which appears when you mouseover any medium to large image. If you wanna stop this popping up you can add this code into the head of your code.
<META HTTP-EQUIV="imagetoolbar" CONTENT="no">

Urb, Cleo,

Thanks, i appreaciette it. I'm writing a script to prevent hotlinking on asp, also to hide the image names on the source displayed.

Urb thanks for the meta tag info, I'll put it too.

I guess there are too many tricks out there.

Besides the "Legal Stuff" which is as clear as day, the No sponsor links (which I understand for it's first day or so), and the issue of conastant maintenance to remove the photos that arent yours, I like these sites (as a surfer) they are addicting I can vote all damn day, on the other hand as a sponsor I HATE these sites, they are a time consuming pain in my ass, constantly having the emails go out to another one of the sites to have the images removed.

Although I would LOVE to have the script in some of our member area's, where did you get the script?

So you think RateDaBooty should become part of my pay site?

There are several image rating scripts out there. I tried most of them and found ImageVote to be the best. It is written in php and uses Mysql. http://www.professionalphp.com/imagevote.php

jonikal,

Get some advertising. You cannot measure how a site is doing without some ads. There are some good sponsors on this board.

Traffic means nothing without sales.
Traffic means nothing without sales.
Traffic means nothing without sales.

Repeat after me.........

What Chop Smith said....

I started in this business several years ago, at first just to
see if I could make a little money (think HOBBY)...and barely
broke even with bandwidth, hosting, etc.

Since then, I've devoted a LOT of time and effort, and it has
paid off BIG TIME! The key to this business is TIME AND EFFORT - there will be times when you get discouraged, but you've just got to stick with it.

The best advice I can give is to learn how to advertise, build lots of sites, submit to link lists, make a traffic pump, etc., etc., etc., and stay away from legal stuff

Good Luck!

Extreme, the script i coded it myself.

Chop, i went to http://www.professionalphp.com/imagevote.php

the site was a mess. broken links/images everywhere, could not get anywhere.

urb, Traffic means nothing without sales. --> agree
Will get that soon, which ones do you recommend?

Pusher, agree with you 1000%, can we see your sites?

Question for Cleo and Greenguy,

is that true rate sites don't get listed?

thanks for the advice. really good help.

I do not have a category for something like this.

To be honest I don't think anyone has ever asked me to list something like this, but even if they had I doubt that I would have.

I list free sites.

A free site is 20 or 30 pics that the site owner has the right to use on their domain and all of the content is located on their domain.

What is to stop someone from posting stolen pics on your site or CP?

I don't link to sites with questionable content.

Cleo,

My site is free.

I have more than 30 free pics, all of them are hosted on my server(not url images)

Before putting the images on my site i make sure they are not copyrighted.
