Baron, I can understand the reluctance of people telling you how to compete with them. These guys paid a lot of money to become certified partners, take the training, set up the infrastructure, pay for licenses, buy their certificate and have things work.

With that said, php can talk over odbc. Microsoft does have full documentation of the SDKs available on their web site. Buy a copy of W2k3 (I am not entirely sure Web Edition supports WMS/DRM, I thought somewhere I read it required a more expensive copy), register and download the SDKs and experiment with it. Its been a while since I've worked with DRM and it has improved greatly, but, right now, its not a project that is in my short-term view.
Yep! Thats what I'm doing. I've read, saved and printed everything I could get at Microsoft. The next step is to see if there is anything available from Microsoft Press yet. I'll be ready to start playing with it this weekend.

And your right, this is expensive. I when I have it working, I doubt that I'd post anything more than "it works"

Cleo, once I get this working, Real Player is next. If you'ld like, I'll keep ya updated.

Does iTunes work under Wine under Linux?
Hi Cleo,

I know you directed the question to cd34 but I thought I would offer my 2 cents. According to the CodeWeavers.com website, their product CrossoverOffice (the commerical version of Wine) DOES support iTunes but with the following known issues:

* CD Burning / Ripping Doesn't Work
(Ripping audio tracks from CDs and burning audio tracks to CDs is not supported. This is due to it being implemented in iTunes by a kernel-mode driver, which would be very difficult to re-implement in Linux.)

* Accessing the iPod (Getting the iPod to work with iTunes still requires the modification of vital Hotplug configuration files as root and is thus not recommended to any one unfamiliar with the workings of Linux. The iPod support also has limitations. In particular the iPod will not work with iTunes 4.7, and syncing purchased songs is not supported.)

* Sound (Due to issues and limitations of different sound cards/chipsets, iTunes may not work perfectly with the default settings provided by CrossOver Office. Please see the iTunes FAQ entry for information on how to resolve these issues.)

So I guess the answer is yes but not very well!

Based on the notes:
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=1347
no, it does not work under wine

Based on the Bronze medal:
http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibi...ame?app_id=134

This application installs, runs, and can accomplish some portion of its fundamental mission.

PyMusique (warning, site very overloaded)
http://fuware.nanocrew.net/pymusique/

DVD Jon hacked DVD encoding, hacked fairplay, hacked wmv9, and now itms. Apple fixed itms, released another version, he and his crew fix it -- its going to be a long battle. I can't help but think that Apple really could have released a Linux version and solved a lot of heartache.

But, who knows. DRM needs to be universally supported to be truely useful. Right now, RealNetworks is the only company that happens to have figured that out. Its just a shame HelixDRM isn't available to the public yet.

Apple is making iTunes available for cell phones. Motorola will be selling one later this year. Who knows what else they are doing, iTunes for Linux seem like a good idea to me.

RealPlayer on the Mac works very well.
