SLANDER - A false defamation (expressed in spoken words, signs, or gestures) which injures the character or reputation of the person defamed; distinguished from libel.

Libel - a published or broadcast false and defamatory statement which damages the reputation of an individual.

The point? Statements such as "...in view of impending investigations..." fall under this catagory and are thus illegal to make.
