DMOZ submissions

Is getting listed at Dmoz still a good way to get targeted traffic?

Getting listed in dmoz now is very, very difficult. I used to do it with ease.

that said, getting listed will also get you listed in google directory and others. It cant hurt, but its certainly not now the end all/be all of traffic sources.

I still try, i still succeed rarely, and its still worth it. You'll get some hits from googles directory and other such places

Submit all of your key sites to DMOZ. Just don't hold your breath waiting for a listing.

Remember the old days, when it took up to 6 months to get listed on AltaVista? That's nothing compared to waiting to get listed on DMOZ these days...

Which old days are those? I remember when AV started and for the next several years my sites were listed in less than 24 hours.

I was probably doing a lot wrong back then, but say 5-6 years ago I had to wait forever for sites to get indexed. Then AV slowly started to lose power and it didn't send that much traffic anymore, so I stopped bothering. Kinda like I stopped bothering with DMOZ.

I used to work with Dmoz doing reviews of sites in the celebrity categories. The fact is, the people who have control within that site are entirely drunk with power. They have gone out of control on what they will list, and they hold meetings in their forums to decide if they should boot sites out. It's disgusting.

*sigh* the number of times I have applied to be a reviwer in cats that I am an expert in and that don't even have editors and been rejected amazes me. I still submit in the hopes some of the editors are still alive.

I am having a dead brain moment - do the cats have a 'last updated' thing. If not they should put one in and if an editor hasn't done any reviews in a set amount of time they should be tossed out and replaced.

No they don't use "last updated" that would make it to easy to spot their inherent laziness. |pissed|

I applied a couple of times before I found out some of the ppl in charge there and now know I can never be an editor there because of philosophical differences.

*footnote: their bot is spidering my pages almost daily. lol

Sarah, I think DMOZ should be nuked off the face of the Internet. Its structure is too corrupted as it is and it's an old dog that can no longer be taught to sit. Better destroy it altogether and build a whole new one. Hmmm, I think I'm finally starting to understand what Schumpeter meant by 'creative destruction'.

So many dmoz experts in this thread.

Yes, there's a 'last updated' date on the category pages. Scroll right down to the bottom of this page and you will see the date.

I once got rejected because they said even though I looked like I knew enough about the subject it looked like my sites were 'for profit' sites and they didn't want editors that had sites they might want to use to make a profit. Huh? How many experts in a porn cat are they going to get they don't have 'for profit' sites especially when they ask for examples of your sites that fit the subject.

oh well, I guess if I could do it better I would.

That is script generated. Which makes my point.

Either that or they add a comma to a description or something, then hit submit. That's an update.

Sounds like a bit of an odd answer, Sarah. Perhaps you should try again.

The last update date is automatically generated but someone has to do something to the listed sites to change the date.

DamageX, If you want it improved ..apply for a category and get in there... till then slamming DMOZ (which occurs every few weeks) is a waste of time, money and bandwidth.

Every editor I know works hard and they do it for nothing.

So all you DMOZ dissers... apply and start doing site reviews on your time.. till then shut the F up.

If you have a site that is in the queue at DMOZ - Go to http://www.resource-zone.com/ and ask where its up to. One of those power-hungry, inherently-lazy, out-of-control editors will answer you question - within a few hours normally...

DD

I understand your point. So this is my final post on this topic.

I know some honest hard working webmasters at DMOZ. They know I know they are doing their best and I have no complaints about them.

I also know some who have been there either from the start or shortly there after that load the cats with their own sites and friends sites. Any submissions from people they don't know are picked apart each time the site is reviewed until the webmaster gives up on submitting. That is not right in my book and that's why I don't like what has been happening there for so long.

I agree to respectfully disagree without any further posting on the topic.

Thanks for the advice Dave, you're right. And since you can't teach old dogs to sit, I won't waste my time trying to improve it. I will, of course, also stop slamming it, even if I think it's a piece of shit.

Dmoz metas and staff like to know about that sort of thing. |bat|

DD, I have applied twice to be an editor for DMOZ, thinking that it would be a good thing to give back to the community...but after the initial "thanks" my applications seem to go into a black hole. Maybe I am filling them in wrong or something, I have no idea!

I will apply again, maybe it will be third time lucky!

cheers,

Luke

The folks at DMOZ are wary about accepting new people into the fold, and if you apply for too big a category you're certain to get rejected.
