Jim - here's the internet answer LOL
answer page and actually - the answer is kinda wrong about the gold - the gold is weighed using the Troy system which has 12 Troy ounces in a Troy pound - which is not equal to a normal pound - actually the Troy ounce is 1.097x a normal ounce - therefore not only are the units of comparison wrong, (comparing pounds to troy pounds) but the 12 ounce answer is wrong it would be 13.164 normal ounces ![]() Last edited by Linkster; 2004-02-02 at 07:00 PM.. |

Here is one that I just saw on NYPD Blue.
In the nursery rhyme, Pop Goes The Weasel What does "Pop Goes The Weasel" mean? I searched online and as far as I can tell, nobody really knows. |

Jim - this was the first explanation of it I had heard of:
When people spun their own wool for weaving they used a yarn winder to measure the yarn into a skein. When the wheel went around enough to wind the length of the skein the yarn winder was geared to make a "popping" sound. This let the person know that the skein was finished winding. The name of the winder was "weasel." However - there are some other versions floating around since "to pop" probably means to pawn something and the reference in one of the verses seems to be to a tavern that is still around Of course there's also the explanation that it was a toned down version of a more "erotic" story/song ![]() |

The best explanation I have heard is "Pop" means Pawn and "Weasel" means coat in old Cockney. Damn, I hope I spelled that right. But, if you listen to the rhyme, Pawning the Coat instead of Pop goes the Weasel makes no sense.
