What Can Change On A Listed Free Site?

For those who think you shouldn't change anything on a listed site, what happens when the sponsor you used:

Removes the pay site and the free content that you used from their program
Dosn't pay their webmasters
Adds a rape fantasy site, or other type of site that you don't agree with to their portfolio
Goes belly up and dissapears

Should we not change anything?

Also what if someone wants to make positive changes? When I first started building sites I had limited knowledge of html and design, so I still have these ugly sites from years ago hanging around, for a webmaster in 2008 they are an embarrasment.

I'll be changing them but not making any negative changes.
