I had a virtual account with Webair. This was before they started with these mega deals trying to compete with Dreamhost. They could NOT satisfactorily handle scripts running on MySQL databases. At times things were running so slow the site was effectively down and it took more than a few support requests to get things fixed (which they never really were).
1000 GB storage + 5 TB bandwidth for 6 bucks/month. It almost sounds too good to be true.

JohnnyR - basically what I said was that I'm very happy with my Webair hosting, I've been there for a while now and never had any really big problems. If you search around, you'll see there's been a couple of downtimes but I hear that about every host, and no one can really claim 100% uptime, IMO.
That said, I've never had big huge spikes in my bw usage, like getting listed at the Hun would cause. I've spiked a bit, double my usual usage, at times and have had no slowdown or other problems that I knew of. I just got charged for any extra bandwidth over my plan. I do run scripts and have sql databases, and have never seen any big slowdowns on my pages. They were also very easy to set up as a noob, which helped too ![]() So that's why I say I like Webair ![]() I'm always leery of those plans with the huge amounts of bw/month, I might use them if I was only hosting static stuff, galleries or freesites, but with scripts and databases etc. I feel more comfortable with a plan that might have less bandwidth but more stability. I'd never burn through that much anyway. And Buncha, thanks ![]() |

I'm probably in the same boat as you. I also have Dreamhost, and they've been pretty good to me too. I'm really not looking to replace Dreamhost. At $10 a month, I can afford both DH and Webair. There are a few things I don't like about Dreamhost, and I'm hoping they will be better on Webair. There have been two (maybe three) instances where DH has choked on a Hun or Worldsex listing. Once they shut down the domain entirely. The other time they throttled the traffic to the point where you couldn't bring up any pages. Both times, I contacted customer service, they quickly moved me to a new server and there were no more problems. In the end, I lost at least 3-4 hours each time, and that could be a couple sales. But there have been many Hun/WS listings that ran smoothly with no problem at all. Dreamhost customer service is not always efficient. Sometimes they answer in an hour or two, and sometimes it's 24 hours or more (even when there's no major outages). I'd hate to have a real problem, and wait 24 hours for them to answer the first email. I have a few blogs on DH that I wish were faster. I don't know if that's my problem or the DH MySQL databases. Also, some scripts don't work well with Dreamhost. They often use some funky homebrew stuff to run the servers. So it'll be nice to try them on another host. Despite those few problems, I generally love DH. Easy to use, lots of toys, tons of bandwidth. I don't lose any sleep worrying some foreign message board is going to hotlink my content and I'll wake up with $100 in overage charges (had that happen with my first host years ago). So I'm looking forward to playing around with Webair and seeing how they stack up against DH. |
