If it was my house, I'd simply hook them back up until I could replace them. (Install a carbon monoxide detector.) He is probably required by some sort of regulation to disconnect anything that his little meter tells him isn't venting properly. You and your wrench are not held to those standards. Also, the venting problem is more likely due to how they are connected to the chimney or a blockage in the chimney and not the appliances themselves.

I'm going to spend the rest of the day posting silly statements on Facebook rather than working. Good day all.
