Google drops P1RATE Bay listings

Very interesting! I wonder if it can be done for the tubes also.

The Pirate Bay’s homepage and seven other pages relating to the BitTorrent tracker website have been removed from Google’s search engine, following a DMCA complaint.

Cnet is reporting that it was a screw up.

Google received a (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) take-down request that erroneously listed Thepiratebay.org, and as a result, this URL was accidentally removed from the Google search index," Google said in a statement. "We are now correcting the removal, and you can expect to see Thepiratebay.org back in Google search results this afternoon."

Maybe they didn't want to get involved in a war.

Peter Sunde-Kolmisoppi told Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagblated that The Pirate Bay's attorney sent a letter to both Google and the companies that are suspected of being behind the allegations and demanded that the Pirate Bay be returned to Google's index. The Pirate Bay accused Google of censoring a competitor and of stifling free expression, the paper reported.

I think Google should definitely step in and remove torrent listings from their searches. Almost every time I search for reviews for adult DVDs, Google happily gives me the illegal download torrent sites in the top 10, often ahead of the official sites. To me that doesn't fit in with the idea of "don't be evil."

I see those listings all the time when I'm checking out a new site to promote.

It does appear though that you can have individual page links removed via DMCA. It may interfere with their rankings, and removing the pages from the SERPs would prevent them from redirecting the traffic to their home page.

I guess that comes under their surfer experience concepts.

Anyways it look like they got their internet access canned again.
