How to start a link list

Is there a software for building and maintaining link list sites or do the link list owners here build them from scratch and maintain them manually? If there is a good resource out there for someone who would like to learn more about starting a link list (both technical aspects and the day-to-day running), please let me know. Thanks.

Make sure you know them well =]

I'm talking from experience about my lack of experience. My link list site is scheduled for an overhaul sometime in winter (total code rewrite). I wrote it from scratch during the course of two weeks and it's a pain in the ass to maintain. I know a lot more about link lists now after having maintained this one for a few months. The knowledge I have know will serve me well when I write the 2.0 version of the system (and I'll spend more than two weeks writing it).

If you're not a programmer it's best to buy your link list system. The other members may be able to give you better info than I can about this.

- Carefully choose your categories

- Carefully choose your submit guidelines. Rewrite them as you need to. If you get tired of 'old drunk mature granny' (as I am) then don't list them anymore and make note of that in your guidelines.

- Respect those who submit to you great free sites. they will make or break you. Maybe even give them partner accounts (I would like to do this in the future).

- If you get a free site that 'just doesn't feel right' then don't list it.

- Make sure somewhere in your link list you mention when your listings were last updated. I never submit to link lists that don't do this (other free site designers may think like me too). Some link lists have not been updated in months and have been abandoned. You can't tell unless they stamp the date on their site when they last updated their listings.

That's all I can think of at the moment, but there's a lot to learn.

Lemmy, this site is probably the best "resource site" for learning how to start up a successful link list. Seriously, get to know some folks here and post specific questions and I'm sure you'll get lots of useful feedback. As far as getting started, basically the first things you'll need are a domain, hosting and a good link list script. If you do a search you'll find lots of threads on the different scripts available. Also, if you're new to webmastering, you'll find lots of help in the newbie forum here too.

Welcome to the board, btw.
