Reaction to new Attorney General
Today it was reported that the Obama administration will be naming Eric Holder as the next US Attorney General. He served under Janet Reno when she was AG. I don't know much about him, but after the trainwrecks known as Ashcroft and Gonzales, I'm feeling pretty optimistic.
Obama seems to be a practical leader and not interested in turning "traditional family values" into law. I take this as a signal that the DOJ will be focusing it's resources on the serious issues of the day like prosecuting terrorism and large-scale corporate crimes. Perhaps this could move the adult industry out of the legal spotlight? Your reactions? |

I don't know that Holder, assuming that he gets confirmed by congress, will be all that porn friendly but he certainly won't be any worse than Gonzales.
Although, I'm not really so sure it makes all that much difference who the person is filling the chair. The AG usually tends to follow the lead of the administration on what is and isn't a priority. The religious right having significantly less influence with the administration should make porn a much lower priority than it has been the last 8+ years. |

One of the casino sites posted this a little while ago about Obama & internet.
We will have to see how it works out. Obama's Promise to Protect Internet Good For Online Casinos President-elect Obama and his advisers have established a website at change.gov listing their plans for governing after his inauguration. Among the programs and ideas expressed on the site is a pledge to protect the Internet from censorship and government interference, a promise which brightens the prospects for the online gambling industry. http://www.onlinecasinoadvisory.com/...edom-42294.htm |

Unfortunately, on the casino side Bush is trying to ram through legislation to ban online gaming.
New regulations designed to thwart online gambling have the financial institutions that must abide by them throwing up their hands. For one thing, the rules do not clearly define what constitutes "unlawful Internet gambling." http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/...ion-65176.html Meanwhile on the AG front, it seems that Holder used to be pretty hard against porn. So I guess it's going to be a wait & see. Obama's AG Pick Has Anti-Porn Past Holder has not spoken publicly about his current feelings regarding obscenity prosecution since his days at Justice, so hopefully that topic will be broached during Holder's Senate confirmation hearings, and/or by the major news media who may conduct their own "vetting" process. http://www.avn.com/law/articles/33419.html |

I thought that the online gambling had already been done. Either way what I am thinking is that even if the guy turns out to be a nightmare for us, we should have a bit of time for any not ready for an inspection. They have far greater things to deal with right now, so we may get a little break.

Thanks for the AVN article tickler, I had no idea that Holder held that position on obsenity prosecutions.
Also Toby makes a good point that the Administration is the one who sets the agenda. Heard a quick blurb on the news that Holder opposes legalized prostitution and opposes decriminalization of drugs. Not good signs. I saw a recent talk by Eric Schmidt, who implied that Obama understands the importance of free speech on the internet. I'll be satisfied if we could just get some clear, fair regulations that wipe out CP while allowing people to have the right to enjoy their porn! |

Let should be legal. I'm just about ready for a prescription here, and wouldn't want to get into medical problems if I ever visited. I keep threating my local bartenders that once I get a script that I'm going to light up some setting at the bar. We've already had court cases that say it is OK to take yor prescription anywhere. |

I don't know that something he said almost ten years ago is all that relevant today. What *is* relevant is whether or not his views on the subject are the same today. I certainly know that my views on many items have changed over the last ten years.

Good point, you can't assume that he has the same views he had 10 years ago. But I think this is still an indicator of his character. The fact that he had this gut reaction to the Columbine shootings... you know, it's the "blame the internet" type of thinking.

Here's a summary of views from a bunch of the industry lawyers.
AVN asked several prominent attorneys who have represented the adult industry to comment on what they believe the Obama administration's, and particularly the Holder Justice Department's, policies will be regarding the adult industry. http://www.avn.com/law/articles/33665.html Interesting that both Obama & Biden have been constitutional law professors. |
