Well, they're up to 8 pages now. I think there's been a lot of board postings and people have gotten off their bums a bit. Even if some emails are illiterate, at least they're there...

And there's this well-written letter from a Roy Huggins of "ICANN Communications". Not sure who he is.

* Send an email to ICANN
* It does not have to be a long letter.
* You can just say "I oppose the creation of the .xxx TLD - We dont need it. "

The emails are posted to a forum here

Been busy this week and hand'nt been keeping up with this thread...
Ijust sent my email, hope it wasn't too late, seemed like the thread was still going. This is what I sent:

It will be helpful for many people who are in favor of .XXX to consider the bigger picture and take the long view. Of course everybody wants to shelter our children and still allow them the power at their finger tips of the internet for learning and socialization. Always remain cognizant that today's children are far smarter and more sophisticated than ever before (in the developed countries anyways) and in every matter we really have to adjust our approach to this fact. That being said…

.xxx is a horrible idea that should be killed forever for one overarching reason…. and that is because it introduces an officially sanctioned censorship mechanism into the net. The point that it won’t work technically is secondary and it won’t work because the law breakers, spammers, and predators will do what they like anyway. It will be a mess because a whole industry will grow up around “WHAT” is truly ADULT and belongs on .xxx initiating endless arguments, confusion, lawsuits, and the like. It will also largely be IGNORED by adult WM’s who will buy their .xxx domain without giving up their others anyway. Any of the “smart kids” one is trying to protect will quickly learn were to find ALL of the BAD STUFF MY PARENTS DON”T WANT ME TO SEE. Every group of kids 10 and up is likely to have a mini hacker in the bunch who can work circles around parent’s efforts to filter. But these and many, many, other reasons on why .xxx should die are secondary to the primary one I repeat:

.xxx is a horrible idea that should be killed forever for one overarching reason…. because it introduces an officially sanctioned censorship mechanism into the net along with which will ultimately develop some kind of enforcement mechanism and so on. For once people let’s look ahead down the road at the consequence of what we’re proposing. Most everyone is already familiar with many recent cases of large search engines bowing to various country/government pressures and either providing data about its surfers OR restricting data TO its users based on government decree. Citizens everywhere but PARTICULARLY in repressed countries or circumstances have to understand that “governments” are completely FREAKED OUT by the internet in general and are committed to gaining some kind of control over it and are making strident attempts to do so on a regular basis. Governments by their nature hate the ability of its subjects to have all access to each other. They can’t operate the way they do without the ability to play various groups against each other. Even amongst all the spam and bullshit the internet has been the veritable “fountain of truth” in so many internationally known ways. This is because of the “wild west” nature of internet access. “User Beware” is actually a good status to have. A government’s attempt to enlarge its policy of informational control always begins by attacking the “low hanging fruit” such as extreme radical political speech and pornography. It will then slowly enlarge itself. Many international government examples of this already exist for policy examination on the results of censorship and the internet. None of them are positive from a “free thinking” point of view.

For this one single reason (and there are 100’s more) the .xxx domain should die a permanent death along with any other “mandated” .extension that ever comes along.

On the other hand .kid domain is a wonderful idea and could become the “fountain of development” for all children around the world. Filters can easily be rigged to operate on only a single domain. A .kid domain would be a market rich opportunity for commerce to develop sites of entertaining, beneficial, content rich nature at all price points from subscription to free (imagine all the public domain education software in one single directory?). A .kid domain would truly create an attractive industry OVERNIGHT. If children and access to pornography and other harmful material on the internet is the question then addressing that by giving children THEIR OWN unique, protected, easily monitored space seems only like the most reasonable conclusion. Doesn’t it? Of course it does. Kill .xxx Raise .kid
